Is there any way to stack stone?
« on: March 23, 2014, 12:51:38 pm »

I've got 600+ stones laying in my fortress.

My 111 dorf fortress has just been moved 120 z-levels down, into the caverns, I found a really nice secluded spot, next to a large waterpool (which after the moving happened to be empty fish-wise, damn my luck) and I don't have space to make such huge stockpiles.

Weapons and goods can be stored in bins, unlike stones.

extra question: I just found a downward passage. What could it hide?

You could use a garbage dump to stack stone.

Answer to first question: Designate a 1x1 garbage dump (press "i" and then press "Enter" twice, and then press "g") and designate all stones to be dumped, through d-b-d.
Given that you have many stones lying around, it could take a while.

I know the dump trick, but then to use the stone I would have to manually reclaim stones from the dump, and that takes time and effort... stone should be allowed to be put in minecarts, and minecarts on stockpiles :v

"time and effort"
Just press d-b when on the default screen.
The default option for the "Set Building/Item Proper" page is Reclaim.
Double-enter over the dump.

Just do d -> b -> c and select the quantum dumped rock to reclaim it, takes all of 10 seconds to do that.

Edit: ninja'd, but yes, it barely takes any effort or time.

:OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

i reclaimed manually since like 2012

it's a shame i still suck at this game so much

edit: So if I understand the mechanics correctly, if I mass-reclaim the dump, I mustn't have any stone stockpiles in my fort, so the stones won't get rearranged, right?

I use a pair of stone stockpiles and a minecart to automatically quantum stockpile all my stone:
1. Designate a stone stockpile as usual; this one should be somewhat big and reserve either 3 or 0 wheelbarrows (depending on your taste)
2. Remove 2 ajacent squares from the stockpile; for best results, they should be near the center
3. Make a new, single-tile stone stockpile in one of the squares; it should not reserve any wheelbarrows, it should take from the big one, and it should give to any other stockpiles (rather then the big one giving)
4. Construct a track stop in the other empty square; it should be set to automatically dump in the direction of the single-tile-large stockpile
5. Set up the minecart route; it should be a single stop (the constructed stop), and the only configuration at said stop should be taking from the large stockpile

When properly set up, dwarves will wheelbarrow stone from your e.g. mines to the big pile, which will eventually be moved by hand into the minecart, which will quantum stockpile the stone on a single tile.

you can have a garbage dump zone designated over a stone stockpile...

Another solution, if you don't mind them only being useful for construction, is to cut them into blocks in a mason's workshop, after which they can be stored in bins.

Once the stones have been dumped just get rid of any other stone stockpiles you don't want then they won't be moved.
Personally I like to then have 4 small stockpiles set to specific stone types, set to give to specific workshops. Any stones not of those types gets left in the garbage dump.

I'd just like to point out that that will multiply your stones by a factor of four; if six hundred rocks weren't creating FPS issues, then two thousand sure will.

You might find the wiki article on stone management useful.

Anyone manually dumping stone is a madman. Seriously this is the 21st century.

Make a quantum stockpile like so:

Code: [Select]
x
s
p p p
p p p

Where 'p' is a feeder stockpile, 's' is a track stop, and 'x' is the destination stockpile. The feeder stockpile should have three wheelbarrows assigned. The track stop should be set to take from this stockpile and dump to the smaller stockpile which contains zero wheelbarrows. Clean, simple and automatic.

If three hauling jobs isn't enough you can create the following:

Code: [Select]
p p p
p p p
p p s p p
p p s x s p p
p p s p p
p p p
p p p

Does that work? I thought carts had to be moving for stops to dump stuff.

Using a cart to dump does work though, I use that for moving building materials close to construction areas.
