Do you think they're onto us?
Almost certainly. The players aren't morons.

"Alright guys, I have a few buds that hang out with trolls every once in awhile. I know some shortcuts, once we get there!"

We will do no such thing, of course.

Are you -1ing my -1 or are you -1 the suggestion that I am -1ing? :v

So now there's two -1's? Why not just put -1.

You try to remember everything that you know about trolls.
-They are associated with the element Earth.
-They are big and strong, but not too smart.
-For some reason, there is almost always a troll guarding the entrance to the Troll Caverns, no matter how many trolls get killed while doing so. No one knows why.

Tell everybody that trolls like to aim for the groin, so they should get protective cups.

You tell them this, but they don't have access to cups, so it is unlikely that they'll take you up on the offer.
Spoiler: GM note (click to show/hide)

The merchant asks if everyone's ready to go, and you all set off down the road. He also mentions,

---
LATER THAT DAY...

You are a group of kobolds. You are sitting around, fairly close to the Troll Caverns, because adventurers tend to travel around there, and your job is to stab adventurers and steal their loot. Today, you notice a merchant on a cart coming down the road, along with four travelers and a goblin. The merchant is driving the cart, and the travelers and goblin are sitting in the back. They have not seen you yet.

Can we still control the goblin?

Keep kobolds hidden until they come to the Troll Caves, assuming that the adventurers will engage the troll. Then attack the adventurers from behind.

If they don't engage the troll, then this suggestion is void.

Yes we should hide and trail the adventurers. but we must be prepared to act friendly or run if they see use we can't do much to them other than annoy them.

Have the Goblin inform the party that the Trolls are Earth-Aligned, so they believe him to be some kind of nice tip-giving NPC.

Is meta gaming allowed? If so we should have the goblin rat the koblads out to the party to increase their trust in us. Also in the fact that we may be one  of the Gm controlled NPCs meaning it will be less expected when we pull out our sudden but inevitable betrayal.

Is meta gaming allowed?
We control like 50% of the characters in this game, so I say yes.

-1, we shouldn't be so dependent on an early level monster such as a Goblin.

Keep kobolds hidden until they come to the Troll Caves, assuming that the adventurers will engage the troll. Then attack the adventurers from behind.

If they don't engage the troll, then this suggestion is void.

+1. During the battle, if it looks like our goblin could tip the battle in our favor, use him to suprise attack. Otherwise, make him a sissy who flails ineffectively when faced with combat. Against our community controlled monsters only, of course.

Oh, yeah! We should just have the goblin scream in horror at the sight of combat.
That'll be hilarious.
