So i manage to get my 2 initial recruits(embarked with 5 weaponskill 5 teacher) to legendary+5 status, and then split them of one with each noobie recruit of the same weapon.Equip everyone with wooden training weapons and nothing-they get the weapons some become military dwarves others dont-and just wont train.i tried recreating squad from the start multiple times, different schedules, different equipment, sending them into combat, remaking the barracks in another level and they just stay there and do nothing but eat sleep and poo.

I currently have schedule of minimum 3 and preferably all 5, squad on alert without a burrow and properly equipped with training weapons.

I know of this diagram and have done everything as i am supposed do.besides i did successfully train my first squad to legendary+5.

Later on i read about a bug where if you set the squad to inactive via squad button they l get to it.some of them actually did do individual training but in the end even they stopped.

If I have legendary+5 squad, I don't train more squad.
forget it.they train or not.
We don't need all dwarf in fort are legendary in militia.

Only two are legend the other are  a flat zero xp.And the question remains what could i be doing wrong or is it a bug?

I've built 3 archery targets, created a squad, assigned dragonbone crossbows to each one of three dorfs I put in the squad. Assigned archery targets to the squad. Changed their schedule so they train all year (like all of my militia, because screw unhappy thoughts).

Bastards won't even gear up. Not to mention archery training.

hunter(or)ranger also need crossbow,ammo and quivers...
I don't train my crossbows squad.I have one always training melee squad.
and many hunter and ranger.(because they always do live training and provides food for fort)
If enemy come, melee squad go first.and form a range squad with all hunter and ranger.
and second wave of my army.

So, I made a squad of marksdorfs. They have crossbows, they have quivers with metal bolts equipped, and bins with wooden bolts at the ready. They are set to use metal bolts for war and woden for practice. They are set to train in barracks and at archery range. They do have some training lessons in barracks. Sometimes they display "Archery training" as their jobs, but don't actually go to the range a these times.

Don't put bolts in bins, there is a bug that makes dwarves unable to pick up ammo from bins. You can check if your dwarves actually have ammo on them by looking into their quivers. There is also a bug regarding setting ammo exclusively for training and combat if I'm not wrong, so it is probably best to just train on bone bolts and do combat with bone bolts as well. This works surprisingly well once you have a good meat industry going.

Might that they are stuck in an order, trying to kill something thats out of reach, or something else.
Try ordering them to go somewhere via move, then cancel order with "o".
Other than that you could upload a save so people can have a look at it.

interesting. I didn't know about the bin thing. How do you keep them from putting stuff in an ammo stockpile into bins? Or do you just not use ammo stockpiles?

also, with regards to melee training, last night I tried setting the training order in their schedule to 2 dwarves minimum. I didn't notice any more sparring going on but a lot fewer dwarves were showing up in the training hall.

btw: does anyone have a link to the flowchart above that hasn't been shrunk down? the linked one is unreadable.

Totally XP void dwarves don't train on schedule. Turn it off, as well as all of their other jobs and they'll go do some individual training. Once they're a novice they will go to training.
