I plan to employ the "Bolt-Splitting" SDT.
« on: March 20, 2014, 03:46:28 pm »

I can easily acquire the goblins since I have caught a lot of snatchers.
The real issue is setting the darned thing up.

The good news is that the Crossbows my mayor ordered to be made will finally be useful.

Signal detection theory?  Service description table?  Sexually deprived teenagers?  Scottish dance theater?

Are you going to control the doors via a dwarf or repeater?

Please, no dwarf, once I had friendly fire turned on...

I'll have the one controlling the doors heavily armored to at least reduce the risk of injury.

Don't worry, he won't be hurt, just don't turn on friendly fire... Oh, the screams!

ah, I tried this one once.. it was somewhat problematic getting the dwarf to run along the path consistently, for some reason he wanted to stand still after doing it a couple of times.  Also getting the marksdwarves to pick up the right bolts can be painful, as i'm sure you're aware.

Aha!  I should've known...

Not sure if you're planning on Dupree's goblin-on-a-pillar-and-dwarven-door-runner technique-- I did something similar once, but with timed bridges instead of door-runners, think it was probably a lot simpler to set up (and pause, etc).  Although I'd need to make a few modifications for the current version, used a falling dwarf to create the timing offset, and dwarves probably fall at a different rate now....

You could try timing the doors with a troop of scottish dancers.  It's a basic application of signal detection theory.

There are easier ways to generate infinite metal, if you're not philosophically opposed to them. There's a coin stack-splitting exploit you can do at the trade depot, and a number of items just generate more metal than goes into them period.

If splitting bolt stacks meets your 'acceptable exploitation' threshhold while these other methods don't, however, feel free to ignore.

I have no morals to exploitation.
Or any morals at all, if I'm playing a game.
I even mod in things because I need something tougher to kill.

Those items include... stacks of coins.  You don't even need to split 'em.  Make 10 stacks of coins, melt 'em down, and you've got 11 bars.

Leggings (armorsmithing) and giant axe blades (weaponsmithing) give 150% back when melted (make 10, get 15).  So, if you want to train one of those smithing skills in the process, those are good choices.

Yeah, but each stack of coins makes 1.1 bars, no matter how big it is (apparently). i.e. make a stack of coins, use this depot exploit to split it into however many stacks of 1 coin, melt them all down and boom, 11 bars for every 10 coins. Or so the wiki says.
