Plague of peace
« on: March 20, 2014, 01:19:47 am »

Hmmm..... it appears that after the first couple years getting many thieves and snatchers (all of which were thwarted, one killed), all of sudden it seems everybody loves everybody around my embark!  On my civ screen everyone is at peace with everyone else, including kobolds and goblins!  I was wondering why I hadn't seen any hostiles arrive with the caravans yet.... and the only thing I've gotten so far is a single giant.  I mean, I'm grateful to have plenty of time to ramp up steel production and build a bigger military (than two heavily-armed marksdwarves who are currently pincushioning the giant from across the moat).

But eventually, I'm gonna want to fight some goblins.  Is there any way to force them back to war?  Or does that just have a chance to happen over time once they get greedy again?

Thanks.

Nope. Once the gobos go kumbiya, they'll never bother you again, as there's no caravans to murder or diplomats to kick off towers. Best attempt to start a conflict with the elves if you're really hankering for war.

peace with goblins does not mean they won't attack you.  Ambushes and sieges absolutely show up without you being at war with goblins, to be honest I'm not sure what being at war with goblins actually does, I think it means sieges can show up more quickly than they might when at peace.  With humans and elves, of course, they don't send anything unless you're actually at war.  Just be patient, some forts seem to get no ambushes or sieges for many years for no obvious reason.  Try and ramp up your wealth more?

Are you sure?
You may be referring to the "normal" state wich is not peace. it's natural conflict.
Dwarves and globlins CAN be at "peace", after a truce of some sort.
I think that when they have an official treaty of peace, they stop attacking.
They doesn't stop snatching though, wich is supposed to lead back to war pretty quick...

In world generation they can be at peace for a limited time, but I generally stop generating after those treaties expire.
Kobolds are almost aways at peace with you, but they will aways send thiefs, and then if you kill a thief(Or many, many more) they will start sending some ridiculous underpowered ambushes, I once had a entire squad of kobold swordsman with silver swords deflecting of my civilian hood...

ok well when I said "peace with goblins" I think I just meant not necessarily war with goblins (i.e. showing you are at war on the embark screen) I've never even seen specifically being at peace with anyone?

Um, I have killed many kobolds over the years in my fort (though most of them simply get away) and I haven't gotten any ambushes from them.

Maybe you never got stealed, if they escape of the map with something enough times they will come, I already got sick of messages telling me that a kobold stealed a wooden log...

They have to steal a lot of stuff to get ambushes from them.

So, if I understand things correctly, Goblins will continue to try to steal children from me?  And if they do it enough the dwarves will redeclare war?

Well, yes, they will never stop.
But the world gen stop forever as of this release, and dwarves don't declare war on anyone(even tough everyone declares war on them).
The goblins don't care about you killing the snatchers, so you can't anger them into besieging you...
I never found myself in this situation... Does anyone here got sieges from "peaceful" goblins?

Hmmm.  I distinctly remember the Goblins being the 2nd closest civ to me, and having the red ------ at embark.  They must have signed a treaty sometime after my embark.  Ah well, maybe if I build gem-encrusted gold furniture they'll decide they want it enough to declare war.

Once world gen stops, nothing really happens outside of your fortress. So no, a peace treaty wasn't signed after your fortress was established. The dwarves, even if they ever did start wars, wouldn't declare war against the goblins, because its just you creating problems. You can cause other civ's to declare war on you, but as mentioned the typical triggers for instigating a war don't occur with goblins.

I had peace with goblins once. It was really annoying considering it was a test of a minecart grinder. I got kobold ambushes and theives. I even got goblin snatchers. Never did I get a seige. I abandoned that fortress. Too bad, it was a savage biome just a short walk away from a dark fortress, but I failed to notice the peace before I embarked.

If I remeber, goblin peace treaties typically only last a few years before they re-declare war, in world gen. I don't know what extent of world gen runs between fortresses (abandon in summer, your next embark is next spring), probably none. If word gen did run in this time, the goblins could theoretically redeclare war after 20-30 abandoned fortresses. But I must insist that world gen never runs between fortresses, so this won't work.

If all you want is a siege, you can use Dfhack's force siege EVIL to get goblins to siege you.

I can confirm that Goblins will in fact siege you while at peace.  I just had a siege in my third year, albeit pitiable.  I had a "siege" of a unit of lashers led by a maceman (not macelord).  Now keep in mind it still took a little bit to get them down since I had to reacquaint myself with military burrowing, alerts, and defend burrow orders in order to get them to actually freakin stand on top of my wall and fire bolts at the enemy (including repeatedly raising and lowering my drawbridge in order to entice them closer).  It took me about a month of in-game time in order to figure out that I needed to not put my wall defense burrow ABOVE the wall, not IN the wall (I'm smart).

Also, my first semi-mega beast showed up (giant), and it was extremely anti-climatic.  I managed to get all my civilians inside (I thought), but before my marksdwarves had even gotten to the wall a straggling hunter who was left outside when I raised the gate put a bone bolt through the giant's head and killed it.  In one hit.  Hmmm. I thought they would be more of a challenge.
