X-Com: Terror From The Deep - Aquatic Alien Warfare!
« on: March 18, 2014, 07:47:38 pm »

Thirty years ago humanity faced a threat unlike anything it had ever faced before. Extraterrestrials - hostile alien races bent on enslaving or killing us all. An organisation named X-COM was formed by international agreement to face this enemy unknown. They fought the aliens in the skies and on the land, and eventually, the alien's central base on Mars, where the vile architect of the invasion lurked - the Alien Brain.

Seeing it's destruction at hand, it begged for mercy, but to no avail - it was obliterated in an explosion that destroyed the base and all it's secrets, along with any stocks of the precious Elerium-115 that fuelled both their advanced weaponry and spacecraft along with our co-opted technology. As the base died, it sent out a final desperate message in a tachyon beam..

The beam plunged into the oceans and recieved no reply. We scoured the area with submarines, of course, but turned up nothing. If we'd know then what we do know...

...thirty years ago, something began to wake up. Now a new horror is emerging from the depth of the ocean.

They strike without warning.

Without mercy. Only one thing is clear...

It's back down to X-Com.

It's all down to us to fight this new menace. This...

Alright, Aquanaughts. First we need a location of our central base. It must be placed in water, and preferably near countries we plan to defend.

Fight the Alien Menace! Join X-Com!

Really, I surprised we don't have any Maxclones yet. Regardless, first mission soon.

Yeah, I was surprised not to get any Maxclones in my game either. Maybe they've run out?

Is this dead already? Also, is there an open terror from the deep yet? Actually I might have to pick it up from gog as i haven't even played it yet.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

No, not dead, just busy.

There's no openTFTD yet. They're saying it'll be after 1.0 if at all, so it's going to be a long wait on that front. I'm using XComUtil for this run - with enhanced SWPs and Gauss weapons.

I don't know why anyone ever complained about SWPs (or tanks in the original); they're a lot tougher than a recruit and invaluable for soaking up fire, especially in TFFD when solid cover is harder to come by. Boosted Dye Grenades are pretty necessary, though; did you enable that one?

As for the base, mid-Atlantic is always a good choice.

Name: Guy Northcott
Gender: Male
Bio: When he didn't have any special skills, he joined the military. When they wanted people crazy enough to fight the alien menace underwater, he shrugged and said 'as long as it pays better.'
Weapon: Pistol/Grenade combos (if I ask for a Dart Gun, will you actually give him one? ;p)

Definition of a Dart Gun - It may as well be a water pistol, that you use.....underwater.

   (It's useless)

Hey, it's actually pretty good for reaction training. Give one to each of your rookies, MC an alien and give it one too, then let them duke it out for a while. All the rookies get reaction and firing xp, and with even Aqua Plastic armor there's no risk of death.

For killing things, though? It's the most useless of the useless starting weapons. It's a good thing Gauss Pistols don't take long to research.
