Webcomics thread
« on: March 18, 2014, 09:18:04 am »

SO

http://questionablecontent.net/
This is a 'general appreciation' thread for things which happen in webcomics.

I just started 'Goblins', which is about a bunch of goblins who decided to take the magic weapons out of the poorly locked chests and gained class levels in order to start turning the tables on adventurers.
It's got the same kind of self-referential DnD humor you find in 'Order of the Stick'.

EDIT: OH GOD NO IT'S SAD IT'S REALLY SAD.

Yeah, he's a banned spammer. Normally we'd delete this thread too, but people were having too much fun with it by the time we got here.

I'm very sorry you decided to start goblins. You will never get to the end, because something has happened, and you will only ever find disappointment. Stop now, while you can!

We also have a thread for both Goblins AND Order of the Stick (and Gunnerkrig Court and Prequel and Homestuck).

We'd be better off using something like this to talk about the awesome webcomics that don't already have their own thread - Nimona, Paranatural, that sort of thing.

Also Unsounded.

But yes. *raises hand in favor of webcomics*

Just saw it hasn't been updated in a month... That what you meant?
Edit... This is dark.

But anyway,
Sure we have individual webcomic threads, and in the past I have made threads for Questionable Content and Dr McNinja, and we've also got a thread for Cucumber Quest and Girls with Slingshots.

Figured it was good to have a place where people could share the ones that they like.
Just saying, I found out about Gunnerkrieg court from the happy thread- Not from the Gunnerkrieg court thread.
Don't have a thread for Go Get a Roomie (NSFW) or Two Guys and Guy though.

... Actually is it just me, or are slice-of-life webcomics really common?

They are both common and almost universally terrible.

Have you read any of Nimona, Paranatural, or Hark! A Vagrant?

I find webcomics to be morally reprehensible and corrupting our youth.

I'm also posting to watch.

So many fans of so many small webcomics- but never really a 'general appreciation' thread. We've got one for anime, why not one for webcomics?

We actually did have a general webcomics thread, Its just been dead for like a year.

Personally, my favorite two webcomics are probably Unsounded and SMBC.

Comics I check daily, even though most of them don't update every day:
SMBC
xkcd
Johnny Wander (not sure if that's the name of the comic)
Wondermark
Dinosaur comics
Dilbert
Hark, a vagrant
Awkward Zombie

I used to follow Gunnerkrigg Court as well, but I stopped a year or two ago so I could read a lot of it at once some time later.

So, talking about SMBC - one of the things I love about it is featured in todays comic. In addition to be hilarious, it's incredibly non-hetero-normative. Or normative at all. It's always just... people, unless it's important for the joke that they have some particular feature they could be pretty much anything.

Today is a relationship breakup comic that involves... two dudes. But it just sort of is, you know?

One of my favourites is Schlock Mercenary. It has been updating daily for many, many years. And by daily I mean it hasn't skipped a single day, not a single holiday or weekend. For ~13 years.

The early art looks like it was made in MSPaint(which might actually be the case) but it slowly got better with every year.

Oh man, It was only when I was on the final boss of 'Dragon's Dogma' that I realized I'd inadvertently become gay. Apparently it picks your 'distressed damsel' based on whichever NPC has the highest 'relationship score'.

Also xkcd is good. I laugh a bunch at the programming jokes and skip the physics one, so I guess it's pretty similar for most majors.

Aaaand finally, I have a fascination with lateral thinking... I love logic hacks.

I like

XKCD
SMBC
Dr McNinja
Bravemule
Cat and Girl
Sinfest
Gunnerkrigg Court
Erfworld (stopped reading when they switched to alternating one comic with one stupid wall of text)
Subnormality (may be on hiatus, haven't checked in some time)
Nodwick (D&D comic generally superior to Order of the Stick, which I felt was kind of garbage. I mean, the guy who draws Marmaduke hasn't improved his art over the years either so I guess Rich Burlew is fine right?)
Axe Cop (dunno if still running, haven't checked in some time)
Penny Arcade / Trenches / Camp Weedonwantcha
Three Panel Soul (and I used to read Mac Hall when it was still running)
Goblins (although I guess that's on hiatus)
Copper (hiatus)
Perry Bible Fellowship (I guess hiatus?)
VG Cats (hiatus)
Achewood (semi-hiatus, possibly just recovered from hiatus and may die again at any moment)
Oglaf (NSFW)

8-Bit Theater was fine. I wouldn't re-read though.

Probably a bunch of others that I'm forgetting. I tend to stop checking if they stop updating, and then discover the comic again and read through the updates. Like I'm about to do with Axe Cop and TPS.

Oh man and I used to ready Wormy in Dragon magazine and I was soo sad when it ended. His art was beautiful. I just really like anything Dave Trampier drew. He burned out I guess and stopped making art and became a cabbie somewhere.

Also enjoyed Yamara, although I was too late to catch Fineous Fingers.

Uh oh. I never thought of myself as someone who reads comics. EXISTENTIAL CRISIS RISING
