I figure any space program goes for suborbital first :p

Not mine....mine START with "straight up, fall back down" then go full orbital, then randomly end up suborbital because for some reason I can't design things with the 2.5 meter parts. It confuses my brain.

Latest Mission is done, I totally went overboard on screenshots so it'll be a while untill it's up.

Mission 11: Aurora 6

After the failure of Roddrin Kerman, We're left with a bit of a cash problem, Specifically we have $5,000 and a rocket costs $27,000,so another loan is needed. The next launch will be Aurora 6 with pilot Elwig Kerman, he however will need to complete the goals of the last mission in order to progress further in this program. The objective is to achieve a stable 70/100 Km orbit and make an EVA report, Then deorbit using the retro rockets and land safely.
Wernher believed that our stability issues may be caused by the landing gear being used to hold the rocket steady for launch. They have been removed but we shall now need to take greater care about wind conditions before a launch. They do however save 200kg of launch weight. Also note the rear stabilising fins have been moved higher in the craft, this will move drag closer to the center of mas making turning easier, It will also reduce stability somewhat however the increased maneuverability should cancel out any problems.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Fingers crossed
The rocket still requires careful manual steering so all pilots have been spending the past week flying simulations in a just released game about the recent space craze called "Human Space program" While the software is of dubious accuracy, it is at least teaching them to stay focused and keep the snacks out of the cockpit, it seems Roddrin dropped some Malted Khocolate Orbs ™ and was searching the cockpit for them shortly before the rocket lost control.( OOC: This rocket requires constant adjustment during ascent and loses control if I get clumsy with AWSD while hitting F1 for screenshots).
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Already we see the rocket wobbling at the pad, maybe we should have left those legs on?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Take-off is.... Bad, because of the wobbling.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Gravity turn begins a bit late as Elwig fights to maintain stability.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Almost there

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Argh! This isn't stable at all!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Amazing recovery, How did you regain that speed so fast?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I um... Over shot the Apoapsis a little, that'll be ok right?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'm higher than anyone's ever been!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Periapsis is now above the atmosphere, we have achieved orbit! I'm the first Kerbal in orbit, woohoo!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Definately an orbit, it goes all the way around Kerbin, you were right Bill, how could anyone doubt you?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This seems pretty unsafe, but there's no air so I can't be pulled off can I?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Retrograde burn at periapsis to reduce the orbit to the desired 100 kilometer range.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Everything's going to plan, we just need to land.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Pod successfully detached from rocket.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I see it, it's so beautiful, I want to touch it. I'll meet you one day Mun, you'll see, we'll be together.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Aurora 6 This is mission control, Elwig you used too much of your limited battery maneuvering the pod so you could see the moon, the heaters and circulation fan will shut down in 6 minutes now, you're going to get very cold unless you return within the next hour."
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Aurora 6 do you copy? You have 3.63 Kamps left in your batteries, you need to very carefully use the reaction wheels to maneuver towards retrograde so you can make the deorbit burn, It takes about 1 Kamp to spin the wheels up, so you'll need 2 Kamps total to start the maneuver and to then cancel the motion."
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Perfect, Now start that reentry burn!"
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Periapsis is below the Atmosphere, whatever happens now I'll definitely come back home.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Kouston, 6 Minutes untill reentry, I'm now jettisoning the abort rockets"
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
" Final checklist, Abort rockets jettisoned? Check! Reentry retros jettisoned? Check! Freezing my green butt off? Check! Craft facing correct angle for reentry? ..... Oh dear...."
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Aurora 6, Don't be alarmed, the craft is shaped so that it should reorient itself once atmospheric drag gets high enough"
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
You were right Mission control, I'm now directly ass end towards direction of travel. Also I'm not so cold anymore.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Heat shield functioned as expected, Maximum temperature only 454 degrees Kelcius.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Chute deployed! The release problem has been fixed, But i'm spinning a lot, I feel kinda sick.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Keuston, Where am I landing?"" You're joking right?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Elwig, The truck will be there for you in about an hour, Congratulations on a well aimed landing.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
" I wasn't aiming anywhere......"
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"This is what a paycheck looks like!"
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
" I think I'll build a cabin here, Those mountains are nice"

Yes! Success, finally. We're back in the black, but not by enough to make another ship, But interest in our program is growing and the funding is sure to increase.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Jeb, Bob, and myself jump into the truck to pick Elwin up
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Perhaps it was a bad idea to connect all 3 chairs to the controls?

Anyway, we now have 46 science, and those reaction wheels look like a good investment considering how unstable these flights have been,, but we also could benefit from batteries allowing longer and safer flights, science jr would allow us to reap more rewards from future flights, thoughts?

Flight control will give us Reaction wheels, Steerable winglets, Mk 1 cockpit, Stayputnik probe core, Mechjeb ar202 and the reflectron DP-10 omnidirectional antenna.
After Mercury Quicksilver is done I'll conduct a basic satellite program which should provide a simple tutorial into how remote tech works.

Since I have Kethane I might as well cram Extraplanetary launchpads onto the modlist.
Edit: Downloaded 4.1.2 which is for 23.5 and KSP crashes, I couldn't find earlier versions so I tried changing the url for the download to "taniwha.org/~bill/Extraplanetary_Launchpads_v4.1.zip" And it located something so fingers crossed that it'll work. I'll add those new drills too, and since I'm going to start on satellites I'm adding procedural fairings.
Edit: And the surface sample drill too. Nvm, that's in the download anyway.
Edit: Procedural fairings has added 1.25 meter fairings to the Flight control research Tab.
Edit: Any version of Extraplanetary is causing a crash,  It seems to happen when Warp plugin loads Model.mu, anyone got any ideas about this?
Edit: I'm going to try a newer version of InterplanetaryStellar
Hmm, so there seems to be a conflict between Interstellar and Extraplanetary, Weird since Scott Manly had both running on 23.0, anyone know what versions he was running? I'm just going to try installing random versions of each till i find something stable, Worst case scenario is i'll have to leave one of those mods out. Which would you prefer I used, Interplanetary or Extraplanetary?
Interstellar is bloody complex but provides heaps of options, whereas Extraplanetary would just provide for more interesting Mining colonies. Perhaps I pared down version of Extraplanetary might work?
Edit: Finally found a stable configuration, Leaving my old version of Interstellar (10.03), and then installing Extraplanetary 4.0 seems to work.
So we can continue as planned.

Make sure to use Baha's parts as well. It's in the Launchpad op. The drills are prettier and you even get a science drill.

Interlude 1: KSRR launches Kaputnik

Queue epic Koviet choir music.

Journal of Korolev Kermov, Chief Designer of Koviet Rocketry Program

Premier Kladimir has been rather insistent that we proceed at breakneck speed in order to catch up with the Kermerican space program. Unfortunately we are not ready to launch any of our heroic Krussian people, unlike the Kermericans who have already managed a successful Kerbed suborbital flight and then 2 days later successfully completed a single orbit.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Our glorious Koviet hero's await their turn in the spotlight.
However we are ahead of the Kermericans in one important area of scientific research, they lack any knowledge of automation or remote control and while we need valuable information on liquid fuel systems, we understand solid propulsion well enough to allow the construction of an effective orbital vehicle. We have constructed a rudimentary remote control unit, but manned space flight will require more research, perhaps we could find ways of getting data on the Kermerican program.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Construction 1 represents knowledge of automation, while the AR202 remote control unit will allow our rockets to fly itself, this is important since nobody here has actually flown a rocket.
We have a large budget and political pressure is onto us to produce something, so the construction of a simple rocket has been authorized, we shall orbit a battery and whatever sensors we have access to, hopefully we can also recover the equipment for study.
We have finished design work on the probe, Dubbed "Kaputnik" It comprises the best automation technology we have available and should be able to pilot itself away from the space center, it is equipped with small omnidirectional antennas and batteries to run the sensors during it's flight, when it gets out of the atmosphere a larger antenna will be deployed in order to continue communication with the space center. The probe weighs less than a ton so a single large solid rocket should suffice to get it out of the atmosphere, but smaller rockets have been attached to the probe in order to boost it higher in case the large one isn't powerful enough, also as we can control when these fire they should allow us to define a more circular orbit, or deorbit the probe if necessary.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Behold the most advanced science in the Koviet Union!
The launch goes flawlessly.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
100 Km apoapsis
We detach the booster and deploy the main antenna.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Antenna extended
Remote connection with Kaikonur Cosmodrome established.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's good.
We test the second stage rockets to see if we can get an effective periapsis.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Still 310 km short of circular
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
All going to plan
Connection with Kaikonur lost, we need a relay to keep control of the craft.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The ground is in the way obviously.
The craft thankfully reorients itself with heatshield facing the atmosphere.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A small miracle.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Reentry is hot as expected
Unable to send the command to deploy the chute, the probe plummets to Kemlya at over 100 meters per second.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It is doomed
A relay is set up with the first stage booster for the next attempt.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Look, another aerial.
Launch successful, the probe detaches as requested.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Isn't that the heat shield?
However, we're unable to establish control over the first stage, it needs a probe core in order to relay commands.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Doh!
Reentry is violent without the heatshield.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The adapter seems to deflect most of the heat, however the batteries explode.
Needless to say the vessel is lost.
Launch of Kaputnik 1 C is plagued with problems.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A problem
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Another small problem
The antenna is deployed, we have only a 40km apoapsis, however the second stage boosters should help.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
So close
Atmospheric drag affects the craft during booster fire, it is unable to remain pointed prograde.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also a problem.
Contact with BC continues even through the ocean, very interesting.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's interesting ok?
In desperation the parachute is deployed before contact is lost, however reentry reheating is still significant.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The furthest we have gotten.
The chute is damaged and breaks off after full deployment.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Thankfully the last problem this craft will see.
Launch D is more successful.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Apoapsis good, Deploy antennas.
Connection established, but something isn't quite right.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Why isn't the relay working?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ok, panic time i guess.
The chute is deployed early again.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hopefully it won't be damaged this time.
Full deployment successful, craft is safe!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
For the first time here at Kaikonur; Jubilation
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Almost breakeven!
It seems that despite our most advanced technology the secret of remotetech eludes us, rushing the program was a obviously a bad idea. The propaganda is making a big deal about our superiority but here the mood is more muted, Premier Kladimir is sending rather nasty K-mails to many of my staff and I need a holiday, perhaps I could disguise a trip to New Kork and Kouston as being for espionage purposes? I've always wanted to see the Statue of lady Kiberty and the Kastrodome.

I need to stop using mspaint for my jpeg conversions, they're a little too shitty. Next updates I'll use gimp
So next up will be the rest of the quicksilver program, it should prove rather safer with reaction wheels, they also use less power per newton of torque so I should have more power available for longer flights. Oh and steerable winglets are probably a must to prevent those bad ascents.

So are you running two parallel rocket programs, or is it just an opportunity to mess with parts in sandbox mode?
