I'm going to avoid reverts, if a Kerbal dies I won't rehire them, of course Jeb, Bob, and Bill are immortal so I need to avoid killing them, I'll probably have to RP their survival or something.
But yeah, if a rocket explodes that's the mission done and we'll be down by whatever that cost, which is really the only way to play once you need to manage funds.
Edit: More Mods!
TAC life support. and
Cargo Transfer bags for TAC.
The next update will see our first orbital insertion, also the hiring of some eager new recruits. Erm no, maybe the next mission will.

Note that I had some trouble with mission controller after restarting, so the budget is a little low now (only 44k left), but we have more science!
Update 3: Data is important.
Bills asserts that the parachute isn't designed to carry so much weight and may tear off during landing (this happened during one rerun of the mission). After much pondering, and Jebediah insisting that bigger tanks would be great, Bill comes up with a solution, decouplers!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also Bob puts some of that goo into a tube, so "we can watch it doing stuff"

Also Bill is concerned that the last mission failed to gather as much information as it could due to transmission problems with the antenna, actually it tore right off, It would be handy to find out at what speed the antenna can survive. The L 1 is redesigned, This new rocket has a smaller tank on the final stage to save weight (a whopping 63 kilos). Sensors have been put on the antenna to detect how much stress it is under, this and the airspeed will be monitored to determine the failure point of the antenna, No companies have provided any funding for this mission.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The sensors are working well, Jebediah, thank you for remembering to send a crew report!

Well, the antenna tore off somewhere around Mach.4 the drag indicator was near .15 kN, Jebediah you need to pay closer attention to the readings, try flying a little slower next time.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The parachute deployed well, but the pod was still travelling at over 100 meters per second when it opened, this still worries the engineers, next mission open up the data on the parachute so we can see what kind of stress its under.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Where did you get that flag anyway?

Update 3.5 We're doing Science!
Bill has an idea, what if we angle the antenna backwards slightly? That should reduce drag right? Jebediah has no idea, but is eager to get back into the rocket, he isn't so happy about that "keep the speed below mach.4 untill we're ready for the test" thing though. Word of the 'real science' being conducted has reached Ionic Protonic Electronics, who will provide a grant for testing the capabilities of their antenna.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Money woo!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Things seem to be going well, however soon after this image the antenna rips off again, once again Jeb isn't really paying attention, but it happens somewhere around mach.35.

*Image Missing* Jebediah takes a huge risk and jumps outside the pod shortly before the parachute deploys, he later sends us an EVA report saying "That was awesome fun"
After landing Jeb grabs some soil from the Kerbal Space Center itself, although I'm sure Bob's already seen this stuff before.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Jeb plants one more flag, is this a joke? That's the warning label off an RT-1 model rocket.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
So much science!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
More money.

So, an eventful mission even if we didn't really learn anything, though it might be possible the antenna was more vulnerable on an angle, Bob has grown concerned about Jebediah's risk taking and he has agreed to leave the pilot seat for the time being, he admits wanting to spend more time 'tinkering with things that explode' Bob's more worried now, but he's distracted by those soil samples anyway, he also mentions wanting to 'do stuff with goo'. Personally I think next we should be doing more research into our flight systems, I might be able to fashion something that will give us valuable inflight data, a 'Kerbal engineer module' if you will.
(I've decided to RP henceforth from the perspective of Bill, our resident mission controller and flight engineer, though Jebediah is still ultimately in charge of the program and seems to be the most knowledgeable one when it comes to rockets., and undeniably is our resident high-risk test pilot.

Update 4:Just what the hell is goo anyway?

Bob is eager to learn more about this 'goo' substance, and has reluctantly been talked into taking some up in a capsule. Bill meanwhile completes work on further technology that will enhance our ability to survive at altitude.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It seems that we need to take oxygen, food and water for extended trips, the capsule itself can hold enough for about a day though.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A new craft, the L2 is much lighter than the L1 thanks to the LV909 engine, and can safely land with 3 goo cans when empty thanks to it's landing struts. It has enough fuel for 2 minutes of flight.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Funds are getting low again, we need to find more funding.

Lots of science this week, and we learned from Bob's capsule that a 2 minute flight requires no oxygen, water or food, perhaps we could try a longer flight next time? Bob seems busy with his dirt samples and the goo and resolutely refuses to get back into the rocket, and Jebediah's still messing around with solid rockets, mumbling something about 'Smaller!, no Bigger! I guess it's my turn next?

I've been busy with asteroids and also a bit of screwing around in sandbox, but now I'm ready to resume the mission, I was planning on adding another mod the "Kerbal construction time" mod however it seems to disable pausing and timewarp, and doesn't play nicely with mission controller so I'll be leaving that for another time. I have however added modular fuels as it was required for one of my other mods to work correctly (cargo transfer bags). The labels don't seem to be working properly though :(

Mission 5: Perhaps we should have read the manual?

Kerbal space center program report: Week 2
It was an interesting past week, much science was advanced in the fields of liquid propulsion as well as testing crew comfort and habitability, we learned much including that "It's still too cold up there, and I can't breathe very well", Bobs observation seems to suggest that in order to take full advantage of the oxygen tank that was provided to him the capsule might need to be sealed against what I call "negative pressure", I surmise that air likes the ground and gets 'thinner' as you get further from surface, I shall need to do additional science on this fact.
-Bill Kermin Chief KSC Mission controller

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Current status
It seems that others are interested in this mission, we're being offered $30,000 Kerbucks for the data, I'm planning to briefly pop outside the capsule to conduct some experiments on the air there, it should help if I have some way to keep the craft flying at a certain altitude and after much research i have devised the following;
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Wings! They're kinda small but should do the trick, Also Jeb worked out how to make parts explode away from each other laterally and Bob has created a.... cone, for your nose? Whatever
The redesigned L2 now has wings, and one less goo pod to save weight. As an afterthought I've added a solid rocket to get higher before cruising at research level. Bob suggests adding one of those new radial parachutes to the solid rocket to test if we can recover it. I don't really see the point since the empty booster is actually worth less than the parachute, but I guess we do need to test the new chutes right?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Looks Impressive
Since Bobs flight just managed to pass 10km, I'm looking for an altitude of 20km for this flight. The engineer computer will tell me when I have enough velocity to reach the intended Apogee, I also need to keep an eye on the amount of drag going on outside the capsule, I don't want to be dragged away during my "EVA".
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's got a little kick to it.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Too much kick, I'm being pulled over! I'm going to die!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Well, look at that, the parachute tore the still burning booster away, otherwise I'm sure it would have kept pushing into the stack separator and I would have had no control.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Regained control, I can just see the booster crashing into the launchpad through the external camera.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'm well on track to reach the 20 KM mark, but the air up here is so thin the wings do nothing to retain altitude, also I don't think i want to go outside now D:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I better write this stuff down,.... Maybe later, I'm falling.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Travelling pretty fast, I hope the parachute will be ok.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I can see my house from here!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Next time I'm reading ALL THE MANUALS
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Science stuff.

Well, erm, that was terrifying, I fail to see what Jebediah likes so much about all this. While the mission to study the 'upper atmosphere' is important it is quite obvious that the air up there is too thin for kerbal-kind. My idea of EVA research must sadly be put to rest, however the capsule held up quite well against the pressure despite swelling up like a balloon, I must get to work on making the thing safer under lower pressures, maybe even against a 'total vacuum' ? The idea is preposterous because most kerb believe that space is full of some kind of 'ether' that allows 'the stars to move' and the 'planets to wander' and also 'the force to be with us' whatever that is, however I'm starting to think that if I go high enough the air will be gone totally. Jeb is still busy working with on rockets with wernher, or as he puts it "stuff that goes bang", Bob is...... 'Debriefing' The goo I just took up and I've got work to do. It seems that we need to expand the staff some more, I hope we can find someone willing to take this dangerous job.

Mission 6: Quicksilver 6 and the right stuff.

Time flies here at the KSC, it's been only 8 days since the program started and already we've advanced science so much that the facility once again needs expansion, this time work begins on a "Kerbonaut complex" to train, house and otherwise look after our brave pilots, Anyway Mum was getting a little sick of the smell of rocket fuel from our laundry during the sleepovers we've been having, though Wernher's taken a shine to her.
We've had so many applicants to the advertised position of "Tin can jockey" (That's the last time I let Jeb handle anything to do with public relations) that we sadly need to turn down 3 applicants, A rigorous testing program is conducted whereby we tell the applicants exactly what we have planned for them and a third of them change their mind.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Brave souls.
Hiring costs $30,000 leaving us very short on funds, however we've done good science with far less and the program is stronger with fresh blood.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Current budget
After discussing my near miss in the last mission with the new crew we reach a consensus that increased crew safety is needed in case of a malfunction. A trip to the science center finds Wernher and Jebediah working on "general rocketry" and have designed something which may help to separate a capsule which is stuck against a malfunctioning rocket.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Behold, the mighty sepratron. No its not just a toy rocket with added struts to attach them to stuff, I swear, it's at least 10 times the size of an RT-1
Jebediah agrees to test the new system while the new guys finish their fitness training.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The pad abort system, installed onto a fully equipped and weighted capsule and then onto a test frame, we're not going to risk testing it on a fuelled rocket, also Jeb might take it for a joyride. Engineer misreports it's dV, it actually has 124 m/s
It's simple enough Jeb, when you press the abort button the stack separator detaches the capsule then the rockets fire you away from the pad, you then eject the abort frame then wait untill the capsule starts travelling down before firing the parachute so it doesn't get tangled in the capsule.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Bob's red paint looks great, it just screams "get me outta here!"

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Sproing!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That's a sensible flag you have there Jeb, I expected something silly again.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We gathered a little science from the ground.
That was a successful mission, the new recruits are now satisfied that they can be rescued if anything goes wrong. Now we need to get back to the important science, so I must find funding, and produce a clear plan for the next missions. Since we have 6 newbies, we should launch 6 missions, each using the same hardware and with similar mission profile so we can maximize our knowledge and also because it's cheaper that way they tell me. This program shall be called "Quicksilver" and the main goal will be to put someone into orbit or something.
Edit: New mods, Part welder and Kerbpaint

Mission 7: Quicksilver and the Pretty Giant Missile 11 meters high which is Launched from the Space Center which has a lot of banded iron formations around the place.

After much discussion with the team, a plan has been drawn up for the Quicksilver program, High altitude research will once again be performed and Wernher tells me he's working on some things that will help us to gain more science. The plan calls for 6 launches each of which will have an incrementally more complex or difficult goal, eventually testing the launch vehicle to it's maximum potential. The capsules have been named by their pilots after things that inspire them.
Code: [Select]
Mission Number           Callsign         Pilot     Perigee Min/Max    Apogee Min/Max      Other Goals
Quicksilver Redstone 1   Freedom 6        Ferbur    55504/----          55504/----         First test of rocket, check high atmosphere.
Quicksilver Redstone 2   Liberty bell 6   Albro     70k/---             70k/----           Establish stable orbit, Test retro rockets
Quicksilver Redstone 3   Friendship 6     Roddrin   70k/100k            70k/100k           Circular orbit, conduct science
Quicksilver Redstone 4   Aurora 6         Elwig     83618/----          ----/93628         Deploy Com equipment in low eccentric orbit
Quicksilver Redstone 5   Sigma 6          Seanner   120k/150k           120k/150k          Deploy Com equipment in higher orbit.
Quicksilver Redstone 6   Faith 6          Adgel     55504/----          55504/----         Check maximum potential of rocket.
A new launch vehicle will be needed, Wernher calculates that approximately 6 FL-T400 tanks worth of fuel will be needed in order to achieve the parameters of our planned missions, the LV-T30 should have barely enough thrust to lift this and the capsule, with small margin for scientific equipment, for added stability larger tanks are needed. Wernher also suggests adding a second package of light weight solid rockets in order to deorbit the craft.
Sadly we're 15 science short, and Wernher tells us that it's essential that we get these new tanks if we don't want the rocket to wobble and explode.
So while we're waiting I take a look around the space center.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Why am I still wearing this?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Definitatly charred, yes.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Bored goo doesn't tell me much. Waste of $9,000 Piece of equipment? Naw, since it hasn't gone anywhere we can reuse it.(I was surprised at this)
The next day Wernher tells me the new tanks are ready, huzzah!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The FL-T800 fuel tank holds double the fuel of our old tanks, so we can get twice the stuff into orbit, right?

The new rocket, stands over 11 meters tall, much higher than anything we have seen before. It has been dubbed the Redstone by the Kerbonauts in reference to the hematite around the space center grounds which gets scattered during the test firings of the engine. Actually it's kinda dangerous we should probably get someone to sweep that up if we make more powerful rockets.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
4244 m/s dV and total weight of 17.4 tonnes, This should suffice. .

Our budget isn't looking too healthy, after construction only 10k shall remain for snacks.

Mission 9: Liberty bell 6

We can't afford to lose another rocket, so after very careful checking of the telemetry from the last flight we have determined that the rocket was unstable, mostly that drag from the escape device and the support girders were causing unstable airflow. The redesigned rocket features a pointed escape device to direct airflow more smoothly, a dummy antenna opposite the real one to even out airflow, and careful repositioning of the support legs has allowed removal of the girders altogether. This alone saves us 500kg and provides an extra 93 dV.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And a brand spanking new paintjob.
We take out a loan in order to build the rocket and we move the mission schedule down, Furbur must wait for his turn in the pilot seat. Albro's capsule is ready for launch and he has been briefed on his mission; to achieve a stable 70,000km+ orbit and report the conditions, then to test the reentry retro rockets in order to return to Kerbin. He will be keeping his periapsis inside the atmosphere just in case the reentry rockets have a problem, the air resistance will enable him to return.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This will leave us $17299 in debt. But if successful we will repay our loan and have enough for the next launch
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Albro handles the launch like a pro.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
No, he's right to be worried, this is about the point where Freedom 6 lost control.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
There must have been some fuel left in those retro rockets, This still counts as a landing right? Reentry took 7 minutes which we should keep in mind for life support.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Science!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
What the hell, where is our payout? Either mission controller is broken or that violent landing counted as a crash rather than a landing, either way a little save game editing is in order.

Next time we should take up some goo pods, We could sample the upper atmosphere and space, Also Albro only managed an EVA report in the upper atmosphere, Roddrin can do one while in a proper orbit. The rocket is still fairly unstable, so we could research Flight control for reaction wheels which would allow safer and far more efficient ascents. Or we could research Science tech which would give us batteries and the science jr.

I keep breaking them :/ The first 2 of the last update were broken and have been fixed. I went a bit overboard with the pictures theres about 11 MB in total now. Thanks for the interest! I'm thinking of replicating the Titan rocketsduring my next set based on the Gemini missions, then when I start putting probes out to other planets I'll make an R7.  Eventually I'll make a Saturn 5, but in all honesty It'll be overpowered, my current rocket actually has enough Dv to put the capsule out to the Mun, as long as I can launch it efficiently.

Preparations for the third Quicksilver mission are underway, we see our budget is finally positive again, but with barely enough to build the next craft, if we fail to achieve our goals we shall be in debt once more. Our goal for this mission will be the establishment of a stable orbit, and the conduct of science once there, Albro's high atmosphere EVA in the last mission gave us valuable information about the performance of the pressure suit and Bob is confidant that it will survive a mission in complete vacuum, therefore a "space walk" shall be attempted. (ooc: I may have forgotten to mention that Bob designed our pressure suits, with help from the goo taken in a previous high altitude mission) Bob suggests taking a goo pod, however this will wait until the next mission as the spacewalk itself presents enough of a challenge.

Financial and mission overview
The issue with unburnt solid propellant from the reentry retros detonating upon impact has been solved, A decoupler has been added to remove the spent retro rockets before reentry, this adds an additional 40 kg to launch weight.

Looks good, But I fail to see why the retros don't burn up during reentry, they're OUTSIDE the heatshield ffs.

A disappointed Roddrin Kerman makes reports his flight status.

Well, Albro and Furbur did say the rocket was hard to control, Some more testing is necessary before the next flight. Once again a loan is needed. Wernher adamantly suggests we develop "reaction wheels" before making another Kerbbed flight, But Elwig, Seanner and Adgel are eager for their turn flying the can.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Note that the mission you tried in Liberty Bell is for a stable orbit, not just suborbital. Yeah, sorry.

Indeed, I do this.

I figured it would have listed a periapsis as well like it did for all the rest of the orbit goals :p
Edit: Also Kerra 1 says 'orbit goal' but seemed fine just accepting getting above 10 kilometers suborbitally.
But anyway, I figure any space program goes for suborbital first :p
