A Stupid Dwarf Plan, or How To Train Your Cave Dragon
« on: March 17, 2014, 11:17:00 am »

So after reading up a bit on animal training in DF2012, having not played in a long time, I decided to see just how far I can take it before everything blows up in my face. Adding [CHILD] and [PET_EXOTIC] tags to the raws wherever I see fit, I'm going to attempt to have a domesticated population of everything I can get my hands on. So far this only includes a female elk bird, a male magma crab and a female cave dragon (which I've set to have a childhood of 20 years), but it's a start.

I also added in giant cave crocodiles and giant unicorns, both tameable (as are their normal versions now), and I'm in a Joyous Wilds biome with a few tiles of Untamed Wilds mountains. Any suggestions, tips or requests?

EDIT: Female bugbat acquired.

You should keep some of the more exotic creatures poorly trained, so you can have a stock of tame and wild cave dragons to fight your dwarves/each other.

I could do that, but I'd rather avoid making too much of a mess of things (he says as he lets the half-wild cave dragon out to lay eggs). Besides, once I get them domesticated they can fight FOR me.

Ooh, a troll. Male, but still. War trolls, anyone?

You could just mod them all to be domesticated from the get go.

I always had trouble finding a dragon, let alone two.
Did you used bruteforce and sheer luck, or do you have any advice on how to get a pair?

I just set an assload of cage traps outside my cavern entrance and waited, and boom, cave dragon. Pure luck.

Also, I now have a female helmet snake, a male black bear, two male giant tiercel peregrines, and I have successfully domesticated one male and two female bugbat pups.

I'm sure as hell gonna try and get a breeding pair of surface dragons, too. And hydra. And rocs.

EDIT: Aaaaaand the instant I hit post one of my weaponsmiths goes moody. Secretive. Sweeeeeeeeet.
EDIT2: Oh my god he took the adamantine.
EDIT3: All five of my bugbat pups have been domesticated. Two male, three female.
EDIT4: Naturebody the Rapid Wails, an adamantine pick worth 1255200. Goddamn. Gobbos are going to be swarming me when I finish up with this undead siege.

I would like to point out that picks are awesome weapons. And that one experienced dwarf with a pick can dig trough three goblin squads almost untouched. Who knows what a adamantine one can do...

I've captured a minotaur and set it up to be trainable and all, but I have to ask: I know about the bug with named animals being effectively untameable, but is that still around what with the new training system, and does it affect megabeasts who come to your fort pre-named?

Named things are named because they are enemies of your civ. Dwarves will aggro them as they are considered ancestral enemies.

I've tamed a dragon that had a name before it came to the fort and so far it hasn't breathed fire on anyone. I think it's fine.

So what you're saying is I'm never going to have domesticated megabeasts? Even though players have had domesticated dragons before, at least in earlier versions?

EDIT: Oh, awesome. Minotaur should be all good, then, but I'm going to have military on hand just in case. Too bad the male one that showed up earlier got shredded by zombies.

Huh. So apparently rocs are not actively hostile. And I now have one. Female, so I'll be getting eggs the size of cows.

So long as it's not a enemy of your civ you might be able to tame it. In the air on if that's going to be as plausible as it sounds though. Idk if megas attack if they aren't enemies.

My minotaurs both dehydrated to death. ._. I didn't know they had to eat/drink.

(and now they don't)
