TSG: The Yucca Academy for Young American Mages

The dry inferno of August Air assaults your face as you step off the bus. By air, then land you traveled to this inferno of a land, lead only by the promise of answers... by the promise that you are not alone nor are you some weirdo.

The letter promised top rate magic lessons free of charge, and the man they sent down did a great job of convincing you and your family that this was not some scam. Magic is real, and you have what it takes to learn it. Magic is real, and this outwardly unassuming collection of buildings in the middle of the Mojave desert is where you are going to learn it.

The walk up from the parking lot to the dining hall is a quarter mile straight up hill. By the time you arrive you are more than grateful for the free lemonade and water provided at the Welcome Seminar. Said Seminar begins with one of those silly introductory exercises, in which you briefly introduce yourself to the other 14 year olds sitting around you...

With the introductions over with, there is brief lottery to determine the order in which students get to pick residence halls. The four residence halls play a major role in school culture, and are all rivals in various competitive sports and events. You are lucky enough to get 8th pick overall, and as such there are still spots open in each hall...

After a brief period of reorganizing, in which students arrange themselves at the tables by residence hall, it comes time to select classes. Again, you draw fairly high in the lottery, and by the time you get to pick the only class that has filled up is the introduction to Ice Elemental Magic, which you figure must be popular due to the climate...

The meal consists of Turkey, Stuffing, and several veggies and prepared grains that you have never seen or even heard of before. It all tastes delicious. Your Life Before Coming to the Academy in Three Sentences or Less: Rather quiet upbringing from a suburban area with caring parents. Parents introduced us to tabletop gaming at an early age. The years preceding us coming to the academy was uneventful, being mostly sheltered from the outside world.

(Alright. Got tired of Waiting, and rolled a d3 to Pick from completed submissions. Looks like we are Froggy Ninja's Character.)

David West the Freshman Mage Student of Blacklight Towers:

"Comeon brah! Follow me to your future!"

You can tell from his voice, and the fact that he leads you dashing across campus with his arms outstretched like a plane, the Herald Jones, one of the Blacklight Towers RAs in charge of keeping his eyes on the freshmen, is already enjoying some sort of mind altering substance.

The sun is down now, so you can keep up with Herald, and he eventually leads you to a tower nestled in a small canyon. It appears to be a good 30 stories high, and decorated in all sorts of multi-colored strobe lights. It seems to be constructed from some pitch black stone with some sort of reflective coating.

Inside, the main hall is clearly set up for a party, but the place seems to be anything but happening. "Only the RA's and Freshman are here for now kiddo. The Party starts tomorrow when everybody else shows up!" Herald explains before grabbing you by the shoulder and leading you to the elevator.

You Suite is on the 17th floor of the tower, and it is more liveable than you would have expected. There is a small kitchen dining area, a decent sized living area with chairs, a sofa, tablespace, a TV, and an Air Hockey Table, A decent sized lab for school projects, a master bathroom, and two dorm sized bedrooms with two beds each. Cookies and Fruit Punch are set out in the living area.

"Alright bros," Herald announces after your three suitmates arrive several minutes later, "As your RA, it is my duty to go over the Blacklight Tower Residence Rules with you dudes. Rule one is 'No Means No'. Rule two is don't cause too much structural damage to the tower. Other than that, just have fun. The verbal password to override the enchantment that prevents you from entering the opposite gender bedroom is Cucumber. If you need any party supplies, talk to me or one of the other RAs, we have you covered at a reasonable price."

With that, Herald departs and leaves you to spend the night getting to know your Suitemates. You quickly find them to be a pleasant enough bunch.

Charlie Burke is your roommate. He played basketball and football in middle school, and looks to continue in his Athletic Pursuits at Yucca. Standing in at 5'11, and clearly nowhere near done growing yet, Charlie looks to be a good friend to have. He seems nice, but also prone to bragging.

Betty Gunderson is one half of the pair that occupies the ladies bedroom in the suite. She comes from a questionable background, and isn't terribly keen on letting magical pursuits distract her from her goal of becoming a talented writer and musician. Her sense of humor is usualy crude, but she isn't below dropping a literary reference from time to time either.

Cynthia Beake is the other half of the pair that occupies the ladies bedroom in the suite. Her brother Whalter is a 3rd year Transhuman Studies Student, and Cynthia is intent on following in his footsteps. At first she is quite the killjoy, annoyed that there were no spots left in the Catacombs when it came time for her to pick a hall, but once she calms down you manage to strike up a fledgling friendship with her over your mutual appreciation of staged 'magic'.

The 'getting to know you event' is fairly tame, as nobody in the suite seems brave enough to take the shenanigans to far to quickly. Nobody orders any party supplies from the RA, and nothing too crazy results from the eventual game of truth and dare; You are forced to admit that you find each of the girls 'doable', Charlie ends up kissing your pet dove George Oscar, and Betty ends up reciting some erotic House of Cards fanfic she wrote, but is reduced to uncontrollable giggles before she can get to the interesting bits.

Following Truth or Dare, there is a brief Round Robin air hockey tournament, in which you manage to beat Cynthia, but lose to both Betty and Charlie, and you end the night watching some non-mundane B-movie about a Succubus out to avenge her sister's murder at the hands of a biker gang. You end up crashing on the couch...

The next morning you wake up to find that you have been sent the day's announcements by text. You quickly put together a list of things you could do for the day...

It is Saturday. You have five actions to spend doing whatever you want, including but not limited to things on the following list:

This seems like a relatively reasonable flow of events. I second it. It might do us well to bring some Party Cheer with us to the party, and knowing more information about the area never hurts.

David Rex the Freshman Mage Student of Blacklight Towers:

You clean up for the day, get dressed, ask Herald to show you where you can get some food, and then head off to meet up with Dr. Vargas' tour group.

Dr. Vargas is a tall middle aged woman with a bright smile and festive dress. She introduces herself as the head curriculum writing for the Academy's illusion magic program, as well as a Blacklight Tower Alumni. The tour group consists of about 20 other freshmen, but Betty is the only one that you recognize.

The tour first shows you around the tower. Aside from the lounge and suites, the building also contains a computer lab, a student store, and a rooftop swimming pool.

Next you are lead out the back door into Blacklight Canyon, a narrow and well shaded opening in the mountains surrounding campus that can only be accessed through the tower. Dr. Vargas informs you that the canyon is usualy 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the campus during the day.

A small stream, which the students and staff call The Waters of Invigoration, cuts through the heart of the canyon, ending at the tower's moat. Dr. Vargas informs you that the stream is magically kept stocked with several magical and mundane fish species, and that fishing gear can be purchased in the tower store.

Directly behind the tower are the three canyon gardens. The Black Garden is a well decorated outdoor patio area in which parties are often hosted. There are also plenty of tables at which students can sit and work when there are no festivities going on. The Blue Garden is less fancy, and off limits to freshmen without special permission. 2nd and 3rd year students use the Blue Garden for class projects. The Red Garden is the same, but for upper class-men and professors.

You are then lead through the canyon. Dr. Vargas explains that it is a 40 minute walk from the Tower at one end of the canyon to the Waterfalls at the other. The trail offers a beautiful view of both desert plant-life and pine trees. You are warned that sometimes Mountain Lions prowl the area, but most of them are smart enough not to fuck with a student of magic. Every once in a while, something even more nasty will show up, so it is advisable to hike the canyon trail in groups of at least three at night.

Halfway down the trail is a large wooden building that Dr. Vargas explains is the Alpine Lodge. The Alpine Lodge is where elven students from High Desert stay when visiting campus for an event. When there are no elves around, Tower-Dwellers may book a luxury room in the lodge for 50$ a night. It is a popular place to take a date, or to escape the party culture for a weekend to focus on work.

At the far end of the Canyon, the Waterfall Building rests against the mountains. Inside is a large foyer that contains the 3 story high waterfall that is the source of the Waters of Invigoration. Dr. Vargas says that the building contains a few classrooms in which some nature classes are hosted on Fridays, a few Suites for upper-classmen Tower Dwellers to live in, the outdoor recreation center where students have access to free guide service and loaner supplies for hikes and other such adventures, and a restaurant and brewery that Dr. Vargas describes as the best place to spend meal plan points.

As if to prove her point, Dr. Vargas buys everybody lunch at the restaurant. The wings and fries are amazing. You share a table with Betty and two other students who you get to meet.

Delfina Wolfe is a student from the Old Yucca Barracks who decided to crash the tour upon hearing that there was a free lunch involved. She is a self described gamer geek who, unsure of what she wants to do at the academy as of yet, is taking all four of the basic classes. You do learn, however, that she is in your enchantments class. You quickly and successfully deploy the timeless 'lets exchange phone numbers so we can update each other should one of us miss a class' trick on her. Her choice of lunch is the shrimp and pasta.

Bruno Tar is a 3rd Year student who got kicked out of the Barracks at the end of the previous school year, and had to change residence halls. He is an earth magic specialists and an athlete who hopes to make the Blacklight Tower Varsity Sandball Team so that he can exact revenge against his old hall on the court. He speaks in complex non-mundane terms, so you have a real hard time following most of what he says. He enjoys a chef's salad and a protein shake for lunch.

Betty spends most of the meal eating her pizza and drinking her shake quietly. Afterwards she confides in you that her encounter with Bruno would make an interesting short story.

Returning to the Tower, you decide to skip the early stages of the party and enjoy an afternoon nap so that you may stay up late. You wake up at 4:30, flag down a student on a golf cart, and ask him where the extra credit party and workshop is held. Instead of telling you, he agrees to just give you a ride.

The dinner takes place in the instructor residence village dining hall. Mr. Key is a young man in his mid twenties and seems nice enough. He arranges you all into tables of three and serves a hearty beef stew for dinner.

"I picked up most of what I know about Potion Making from my mother, who was Russian," he explains as you all eat, "In the Eastern European Style, there isn't a whole lot of difference between making a Potion and making a stew."

Once the food is completed, Mr. Key passes out a bunch of potion making supplies and an instruction sheet. He promises that once class starts properly he will explain everything, but tonight he would rather you try to follow the instructions and figure it out on your own, so that he can 'see who the quick learners are'.

Sadly, your table runs into trouble. Both your table mates are type-a personalities who want to control the project, and both quickly learn that they cannot stand one another.

Gina Torres of Goldrush Lodge is one of those young ladies who can and will do anything to succeed in all that she does, while Timothy Grain of Clark Memorial Catacombs comes from an old and wealthy family of casters, and is by no means content with taking orders from some girl from a more mundane background.

By the time the workshop is over, your table has utterly failed in producing a potion. Both your tablemates have tried to get you to take their side against the other, but luckly you have done a fairly good job at remaining neutral. On the bright side, you do feel like you have gained some very rudimentary understanding of the potion making process, and Mr. Key is kind enough to give a bottle of Party Cheer to anybody who has failed to produce their own supply.

You return to the tower to find the party in full swing. Almost all 700 Tower Dwellers and at least half as many party crashers from other halls are in attendance. Some groups of people are more or less behaving themselves, while some corners of the party make the toga party scene from Animal House look tame.

It doesn't take much effort to track down Charlie, who is just wrapping up a conversation about magical sports with a few upperclassmen. He decides that he is down for whatever you want to do next.

It is Saturday still. You have two actions to spend at the party. What do you want to do? What sort of people do you want to meet? How hard will you party? Ignore the following list for now, it is just there to make re-posting it easier when it becomes relevant again...

I say, getting "into the mood-drunk" should suffice. The point where you find many things fun, but are not yet embarassing yourself with your speech, bodily movement and conduct.

Y~ep. What else would a normal functioning male at that age do, at such an occasion, having choosen this kind of enviroment? Now, not saying our ultimate goal of the evening is to make sure to remember "Cucumber" to be the word, but getting to know some of the ladies in a bit of a playfull manner, is a good idea. So yeah, staying on the "fun" flirty side, not on the "desperate for it" side. Not saying we will say no, should "something" happen but.. yeah.. having a good time comes first. (Ironically, that is also one of the best mindsets for scoring, but let's leave it at that  :P)

I'd like to kindly point out that we're fourteen. Best to learn how to handle it (Both the booze and the other stuff) before indulging in both. Mind you, there's quite a bit of opportunity to do both (Learn, do actually do.)

Also something of note is to avoid the rooftop pool while drunk. Neither gravity nor water is going to be kind to us if we go near their domains inebriated. Dodging that hazing is a priority though, the more creative we are (And whether or not we actually manage to haze the hazers.) the better.

I am against drinking for intoxication. That would be what is called a bad idea. I recall fondly the annoyance of upper classmen who look at flailing freshmen who have absolutely no clue how to hold their liquor. Which would be us. Also, don't drink the punch. I don't care how good it looks, don't drink the punch. Don't.

In the meantime however, I say play Ping Pong with the freshmen who are drunk. When they aren't looking, use your sleight of hand ability to make the ball disappear, thus embarrassing them when they can't find it. Innocent fun.

Jolly Jocking Why not. Just be social and exude some semblance of charm. Make them interested in you, as opposed to the other way around.

I'd recommend NOT doing this. Injuries aren't beneficial and we don't know if they're angry or happy when drunk so...

Charlie and you agree to watch out for one another and keep the substance use to a minimum. Over the course of the party, you split your first beer (you find it disgustingly bitter) and each take a small swig of your cheer potion (which tastes like a thick and hearty soup).

You feel a little buzzed at first, it wears off rather quickly, and you are never truly impaired.

Locating the pingpong tables, you quickly pick out a few people who are drunk, challenge them, and win handily. You manage to 'disappear' the ball on several occasions, but it fails to win you any attention. Twice the other player simply fetches a new one, leaving you too sheepish to reveal your trick to them, and the the third guy is thoroughly unimpressed.

Charlie also plays pingpong, and sucks terribly at it - After being annoying and bragging about his skill for a good 20 minutes, he procedes to challenge and lose to an older student who is clearly almost too drunk to stand upright. Inspite of the loss, however, your roommate continues to brag until he goads another student into challenging him... and making a 75$ bet on the outcome of the match. On this second attempt Charlie lives up to his boasting, and dosn't so much as miss a single point. A perfect hustle.

Deciding to get Charlie away from the ping-pong before his gamesmanship gets you both beat up, the pair of you move onto flirting. You quickly spot a group of three good looking older students, and Charlie moves to break the ice by buying them a round. You quickly learn that they are all part of the Blacklight Cheer and Magical Effects Squad, and as such all specialize in illusion magic.

You hit it off with the girls, warming them up with some light flirting, terrible jokes, and even a few slight of hand tricks. It is Charlie, however, who has the nerve and desire to seal the deal, and Megan enthusiastically agrees to show him her suite. This kills your chances of bedding anybody in the group, as Jewel is spoken for and Lin is gay, but you take it in stride and carry on the discussion. Your roomate is kind enough to slip you some money to buy the remaining girls another round as he departs.

With Charlie gone, the conversation gets interesting. You mention off hand that you are taking an illusion magic course this term, and they respond by making you pull up your schedule on their phone. After reading the entry, the offer to introduce you to your instructor. You accept, thinking that they meant to do so at some later point, and are promptly shocked as they drag you to your feet and pull you to the DJ Booth, where you learn that Tony Lamborghini, AKA Tony the Liger, is teaching the entry level illusion course you are taking as his capstone project.

"You are a lucky bastard", Lin explains, "Tony is one of the movers and shakers here at Blacklight. He plans most of the parties AND is Captain of the Cheer and Effect Squad. Any Tower Dwelling Freshman in his class will have a huge leg up on the social scene - and if he is as good of a teacher as he is an illusion weaver, you should learn alot as well."

Taking pause, you watch Tony do his work. He manipulates the tables with one hand, while performing complicated somatic gestures with the other. The end result is a track that perfectly combines Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire with several popular dubstep beats. The sound is accompanied by the flourish of silent indoor fireworks that you suspect to be illusioniary.

Eventually the song concludes, and the girls manage to get Tony's attention. Jewel introduces you: "This is David, David Rex. He is in that class you teach, and one of the incoming Tower Dwelling Freshmen"

The DJ glances down at you and smiles. "Rex eh? I'll call ya King then bro. Ya like that? Hey everybody! Hail to the King!"

Those close enough to the booth to hear offer polite applause, and Tony precedes to mix Coldplay's Viva la Vida with an upbeat horn piece that Lin informs you is the Blacklight Towers fightsong, Go Manticores! A towering transparent visage of you briefly strides across the hall, before dissolving into a flock of birds.

Eventually Jewel, Lin, and yourself pull yourselves away from the insanity right out in front of the DJ, and spend some time wandering the grounds together. In the Black Garden, which is well lit and beautiful at night, you encounter a handful of naked freshmen, including your Suitemate Cynthia.

Sheepishly explaining her nudity to be a result of hazing, Cynthia complains that she can't go get new clothes because Betty is with a guy in the bedroom. Jewel conjures up the illusion of a shirt and shorts at your pleading, and your suitemate agrees to tag along with you and the older girls for the rest of the night...

By the time you crash at around two in the morning, you are fast friends with both Jewel and Lin, and Cynthia has invited you to be her date to the Clark Memorial Catacombs welcome party that is to take place next evening.
