Return to town in the morning staying on guard as we travel.

Sell the recovered caravan goods then search for a good cook and some helpers willing to join us. Buy the best variety if rations possible and give the men 2 free days to rest and have some fun.

Request a meeting with the duke to discuss a proposition and some useful information we recovered. Do not mention our 3 new men.

Reasonable. +1

Reserving for comment

I'm not sure if i'm down for camp followers such as cooks and teamsters. That stuff the soldiers can all do themselves, and they may prove a liability should we get attacked. That said, I'm not opposed to hiring on a few cooks, except we will need to pay them. From what I understand, our financial situation is pretty tight.

I agree with purchasing more and better rations. We should gear up for extended operations in the forest lasting several days to a week. Hunting bandits will not be easy or fast, and coming back to the city every day will severely hamper our performance.

As for the Duke, what exactly are we planning on discussing with him? We should inquire about bountys for confirmed kills or for groups destroyed. We could also inform him of the passphrase, but he would want to know how we found it out. Telling him we got it out of some prisoners we took but had to kill on the way could work as a cover. We wouldn't want to tell the duke about our new recruits, seeing as he may grab them and kill them.

Edit: Does Dellman know about our contract with the duke? We should probably bring him and the two others up to speed.

Let's just not talk to him, it honestly is just putting us out there.

Instead let's chat up some barmaid about current events and show off our strengths to her...that's what mercs do right?

I want to talk to him to discuss buying some shields for spearmen and better armor. We can probably get a discount through him if we hand over our prisoners in exchange and our spearmen are a little vulnerable right now with no shields and leather armor.

Besides we need to see him to hand over the prisoners either way and getting a few camp followers means our men can spend more time resting and less time setting up tents but the cooks are the main thing. Better quality food and better meals will boost morale and effectiveness.

But giving him the pass phrase is a good idea anyway because it gains us some favor which we can really use. He won't know the difference between our old men and new men anyway so no danger in that.

(( Yes I am still here. Sort of. ))

I noticed we have a few wounded bandits as prisoners. What are we planning on doing with them? We could turn them into the duke, but doing so will only see them executed. Maybe we could offer them the same deal we did Dellman and his compatriots. What do you guys think we should do? I'm not so sure they would be useful to recruit.

We definitely do need to get shields and better armor for our spearmen. Emphasis on larger shields for better coverage while in formation.

I vote to pass on the pass phrase to the Duke. Maybe we can get some bonus or something for valuable intelligence

A wall of spears would work just fine without shields. Shields are only needed for when infantry breaks through or when the enemy has ranged capabilities.

Odds of us ever facing an enemy with no ranged capability are slim though and lack of shields is a disadvantage in a lot of situations. We're turning them over for execution. We need the good will from the duke and we don't wanna recruit to many at a time or were gonna let bad eggs slip in.

These 3 are fine for now.

Fine but if we go in town we need to have a way to disguise our new Ex-Bandit friends or else we could be wanted for sheltering terroists treason.

Put them in our mens uniforms and give them helmets. Hide in plain sight.

Agreed. Lets not whole sale recruit bandit parties. We should screen all potential recruits and let in only those loyal to the Company.

Loyal how?

"Hey we just cursed at you and killed your men. Mind giving us mercy? It's just that (input sad story about a bad life/war/duke here) which is why I became a bandit."

"Oh you poor thing, you'll be loyal soldiers in my company!"

No, no Buenos.

Yeah that's why I said no more now and cherry pick. Only those worth the risk are taken because that number is small enough for us to keep an eye on them.

I feel that you interpreted what I said incorrectly. I was referring to any and all recruits, not just bandits. Pretty much exactly what Patrick suggested in his post.

Not sure what you disliked about my own proposition. We three seem to be in agreement otherwise.

Edit: Rereading what I said earlier, it does indeed seem that I was refering specifically to bandits. My suggestion for particular emphasis on loyalty applies to all our recruitment efforts.

Loyalty is a bit of a stretch. You can't buy or demand it and no man is loyal the moment he's recruited it has to be earned through actions.

It's why I suggested or voted for the better diet, bonus to pay, 2 days rest, getting shields and better armor, getting a cook and helpers, promoting the survivors of the night raid, double rations, burying our dead with honour  and so on.

All are actions that show the men that we respect and care for them, that we won't take stupid risks and get them killed senselessly and value their well-being. That's how we''ll earn the men's respect and loyalty. That and we talk to them and find out what they think, what they want and show them that we eat the same food, sleep in the same tents, walk the same miles.

If you want men to follow you knowing some of them will be killed or maimed you have to show them that you would do it for them. The first rule of command is that you never give an order you would not obey yourself.

Better diet and getting better stuff is what i agree with.

I disagree with the rest because bonus pay

Money we don't have to blow
Promoting survivors from mercenaries to..mercenaries with PTSD?
Double rations not sure if we have the food for that plus since were a very young group we need to know how far we can march and having not enough food can hurt us even worse.
burying dead honorably meaning what exactly? It's kinda metagamy to just put "..We buried our dead remembering there sacrifices". We don't even know any rituals or have any priests or chaplains that come with us.

Real mercenary companies just don't care, they want to get paid, and have a steady income.
