Double the sentries again tonight on 2 hour shifts. Give double food rations but no alcohol. Meet with our new friend to pick his brain.

Beneviento, does the local.religion have any specific requirements for how to deal with bodies, coin for the ferryman, facing up, left for animals or so on. ))

(( Apparently he came to the conclusion that being dead isn't going to change anything. And he feels responsible for his people and the 2 men left of his 6 joint us so he did as well. He also wanted to be honorable and got stuck as a bandit because he had no choice so he's joint us to redeem the 4 men who got killed. ))

Disregard what I said! I skimmed earlier and missed the brief exchange with Dellman and only read the GM OOC at the end there, so from only that I had assumed he was still standing there awkwardly waiting to fight us.

Sounds good, update probably tomorrow or on the weekend.

I didn't really think much about how burial ought to work, so I'm just gonna say burial or cremation are both acceptable options, but your men will take care of this and probably do it right unless the people they're burying have customs they're unfamiliar with. It's very cool that you asked though.

Judging from what Dellman said about feeling like he was "betraying his comrades by taking a deal they never got the chance to hear," we could stand to modify our approach. Perhaps when we command them to stand down we could tell them that those who do will be treated fairly, given a trial, return to their normal lives, or even be recruited to serve under our own command.

That still leaves the problem of the duke just executing everybody we turn in, but maybe we can change his mind. Those bandits would have experience in small unit tactics and ambushing, and could be loyal if given a stay of execution in exchange for military service.

About the whole renegotiating with the duke deal, thats probably not going to happen. He sounds like a cheap bastard, so the only thing we could probably gouge out of him would be bounty rewards. Those probably won't even amount to much. Like maybe a couple shillings per head or something.

Anyways, for our current action, it seems that we will be roughing it tonight. Posting pickets and rotating watches will be absolutely essential to meeting a sneak attack with a ready defense. For Dellman, I'm interested in asking him why he became a bandit in the first place, as he appears to have some military experience. It would also be useful to know about if he or the other men we recruited have a bounty on their heads. Not to turn them in, but to be forewarned about possible attempts at collection. That leaves questions about his knowledge of other bandit groups, and his feelings about being recruited.

Again, we don't need to persuade him to join us. He already joint us last turn along with his 2 surviving men, the other prisoners ain't his men so he won't care. But I have something else I want to discuss with the duke.

(And the Late-Update saga continues!sorry guys)

Wary of other bandit groups that might be in the area, you order your pickets doubled and relieved every two hours. Your men set up their bedrolls and gather firewood, and soon, a camp has sprung into existence. Your men seem happy and glad of the victory, though the loss of their friends saddens them, and they grumble when you announce that they are forbidden to drink tonight.

Each group of men has split into it's own area of the clearing, with the two groups of crossbowmen to it's west end, and the spearmen to the right. As Dellman has in theory "become" a crossbowman, you head to his group's site and look around for him, and quickly find him sitting with a few of the older members of your band, sharing stories. You ask him if you could have a chat with him, and though he momentarily looks worried, he follows you to the pavilion.

Upon being asked to tell his story prior to being a bandit, dellman chuckles and says "I don't know if there's much to say. Father was a priest, so I guess I've got a good respect for the Gods. I can read, too. I was the third son, and after Pa died I really had nothing tying me to home, so I left.
Joined up with a trade caravan, I did, and we went back and forth for a while. I made some decent coin from that, and just when I was about to settle down, maybe open a shop in some town somewhere, the war starts here, where we happened to be.
Caravan got "confiscated" by a bunch of goons working for a knight on the new Duke's side, and I joined up as a soldier for the old side. We lost. At that point, I was broke and had done nothing but fighting the government for the past eight years or so, so I was just about stuck, no one would let me work for them and all that. I joined up with the outfit you just put in the ground about a month ago, and that's that."

He tells you that the other two men are both wanted, one for poaching and one for banditry. You promise that they will not be harmed. He says that he was glad to finally have an "out" of banditry, and others may feel the same. Finally, when asked about other groups, he says that he doesn't know where any other groups are specifically, but that two are operating in the general north of this area, and that he was told to trust anyone who could give a certain passphrase. He imagines that the phrase was passed in towns and villages to sympathizers and potential recruits. The phrase itself is "Warded, the Dole's Upkeep."

Having finished your tasks for the day, you thank Dellman and dismiss him. You then go to sleep. The next day has much to offer. As you drift off, you think about what you should do about your prisoners and what your next move will be.

Reserving for comment

I'm not sure if i'm down for camp followers such as cooks and teamsters. That stuff the soldiers can all do themselves, and they may prove a liability should we get attacked. That said, I'm not opposed to hiring on a few cooks, except we will need to pay them. From what I understand, our financial situation is pretty tight.

I agree with purchasing more and better rations. We should gear up for extended operations in the forest lasting several days to a week. Hunting bandits will not be easy or fast, and coming back to the city every day will severely hamper our performance.

As for the Duke, what exactly are we planning on discussing with him? We should inquire about bountys for confirmed kills or for groups destroyed. We could also inform him of the passphrase, but he would want to know how we found it out. Telling him we got it out of some prisoners we took but had to kill on the way could work as a cover. We wouldn't want to tell the duke about our new recruits, seeing as he may grab them and kill them.

Edit: Does Dellman know about our contract with the duke? We should probably bring him and the two others up to speed.
