Your men assume a defensive formation, spears in the middle, and crossbows to either side and to the rear. The reach of your spears wards off the bandits from engaging closely and employing their short weapons with the practice they've no doubt gained attacking caravans. Your crossbows prevent the numerically superior bandit melee troops from flanking your spears, although their deeper formation is able to slowly push your's toward the edge of the clearing. With their better flanking fields of fire, your crossbowmen are able to hit 7 of the enemy, killing 3 and severely wounding another 2. 5 of the wounded are enemy bowmen, including 2 of the killed. One more bandit is killed by a spearman, and one more wounded, though slightly. One of your spearmen is killed by a hatchet blow, another takes an arrow in the chest and hits the ground, and 2 more take wounds, neither of which keep them from the fight.

Your reinforcements arrive shortly, and noticing them, the bandits break off back to the center of the clearing. You and your men wait for them to move again. You shout again that they must surrender, but knowing that the Duke's considers bandits traitors to the realm, and deals them the punishment for treason, hanging, none throw down their weapons. One man, and older fellow with long hair and a prominent hooked nose, says to them "Lads, the way I see it there's two things we can do. We can die here on our feet, or we can surrender and face the Duke's "Justice". For myself I think I'll see if our friend over there can give me something quicker than the Duke can, so i guess that means I'll die on my feet." Following this, he shoves the short wood axe he is carrying into his belt and seems to begin to pray, and two men move to stand by him. Another man says to him "Dellman, we can still get out of this noose! We're surrounded, true, but we're still fighting men, and still alive. Who's with me?"

The bandits, cornered and outnumbered, form up into a close formation and rush to get through the gap between the division furthest from you and your left flank division. These men are brave and strong, but crossbow bolts kill them all the same. Your flank moves to intercept them as well. The rush is a foolhardy one, and they must not have noticed that your other divisions had crossbows as well. One falls, then two more, though they do meet your flank, killing one spearman in their desperate fury and wounding two more, both crossbowmen. When your far division moves to attack them from behind, their destruction is complete, and though one man breaks through your line, he is brought down by a hail of bolts.

In all, 12 bandits are dead and 3 are too wounded to walk unaided, or unconscious. You have lost 3 men, while 5 more are wounded and cannot fight. You notice that Dellman and his compatriots have readied their weapons once more, and have moved to face out on all sides. They remain silent as their comrades fall. What will you do now?

Have our wounded moved close to the fire then have any of our men who know how stitch the wounds, have surviving spearmen search the camp and gather together all food and everything of value. Strip all of the dead men ours and enemies of weapons, armor and shields. Bury our dead.

Bind the enemy wounded's hands then treat them as well so they don't die.

Have a dozen crossbows surround the 3 bandits still standing then speak with them, ask them to join us and promise them if they do they will be treated equal to the rest of our men in all respects.


(( Dellman I think has some military experience based on his actions, he's worth trying to recruit. ))

Walk up personally, with only 2 spearmen and 2 crossbowmen, and offer for him to join us. Commend his wisdom, and promise that he won't take part in the duke's 'Justice' if he joins us. Make the same offer to the other two guys. As for the wounded bandits, do Patrick's idea then we'll bring them back to the duke.

Permit our guys to loot weapons and shields from the dead, as well as any coin purses. We will claim most of whatever we find of caravan loot.

No update till the weekend, and probably only one then, then another the next weekend. I've got a couple projects due for school, and then finals are going to hit me like a ton of bricks.

(Sorry this is late, but better late than never, right?)

You quickly order twelve of your unwounded crossbowmen to watch the remaining bandits, making sure this time that each target is evenly distributed, with four crossbows watching each bandit. you then use your standard post-battle plan. You send a detail to collect dead wood to build up the small fire in the clearing, and have your wounded treated as well as you can, and it seems that all will recover fully fairly soon, save a crossbowman whose injury is more severe, causing him to fade in and out of consciousness. None of your men have any idea what will happen to him, as they have seen men in similar condition recover completely, and others die. You strip the dead of their possessions and give orders bury all of them, yours and the enemy's. You send men to gather the food and loot and bring it to the canvas "pavilion" where you will divide it up. Your men find a variety of foods, the most interesting being several barrels of apples, perhaps taken from these bandits' last victims. The other loot is taken to be divided after you've dealt with the remaining bandits.

You also order a small group of men to take care of the wounded bandits, and they quickly treat them and move them to the other side of then fire from your men, as well as binding their hands. They also seem to be stable, apart from another man who seems to be faring poorly. With your administrative work done, you move to deal with Dellman and his cohorts. You offer him membership in your band if they want it, and add that they will be treated as equals if they take your offer. The two other than Dellman quickly accept, though he remains silent for a while before saying "While I know you aren't lying, as there would be no point in your doing so, and there's more honor in what you are offering me than there is in banditry, I feel as though I am betraying the boys on the ground there by taking this offer of redemption that they never got the chance to hear." He explains that was the nominal leader of a group of six men, including himself, and although he was not the leader of the whole band he feels that it would be cowardly take an offer of life even though the men under him died. You ponder this, then one of your vinteners replies that by living an honorable life, Dellman would be contributing to the honor of the men who died this day. He seems to agree with this, and agrees to join your band, under one condition, being that he be taught to use a crossbow. You agree to this, bringing him into the fold of your group.

Afterward, you search the pavilion in the clearing thoroughly, and though you find an empty leather bag and some other assorted items, along with a particularly large and reflective bronze dish, nothing indicates where any other encampments were located. The rest of the loot amounts to about a hundred shillings worth of various coin, of which your share comes out to about 4 shillings and an ecu, which is worth half a shilling. None of the bandits have armor, though a lucky few spearmen win the auction for the kits of the dead crossbowmen. A few small shields, essentially bucklers, are found, and some spearmen take them as well. It seems to be too late to head back to town, so you can either spend the night here or try to make it back at least part of the way.What now?
