Hey everybody, sorry, no update tonight, probably one around noon HST tomorrow. After that, you'll probably have to wait a while, as I'm going on a trip for a few days, but I might get one out during the rest of the week.

In terms of parleying, you do to technically have the right to initiate talks with Jeg, being the commander of the men first over the walls (an ancient custom in this world dictates that the men first over the walls are those who officially take it, and those who officially take it have the right to do as they wish with anything and anyone inside the walls.) However this relies on a loose interpretation of the law, and the Count would definitely not like you doing anything without his approval.

-1. He can do it himself, we don't even know exactly what he wants out of this, how are we supposed to agree to terms? What authority would we have to do so anyway?

So why don't we ask our lord if it's ok to parlay with the enemy, as we have right of conquest? The worst he can do is deny us.

This reinforces my point. Let's ask our lord first.

Request that we be able to parlay with the enemy lord. Take care of wounded, interrogate prisoners, and loot the surrounding town in the meantime.

-1 to looting the town.

We're not going to start robbing civilians caught in the middle. Nobody would ever hire us.

The hell they won't, it's expected of us, we're  mercenaries, and that's what we do. It's always about money. They'd still hire us, they just know the risks of hiring merc's, any merc's. Plus, the money we gain can go towards replacing the men we lost, and better equipment and training. I don't see a malus to this, besides civilians disliking us. I mean, seriously, who hires mercenaries - who fight for money only - and expect them not to loot the town they just captured?

The person who's paying them.

Our reputation is everything. If it gets around that we rob and kill civilians we will be stuck on this fringe stuff forever.

If we wanna grow and get rich we need to prove our skill and build a reputation for loyalty and honor.
Then we'll get more recruits and better contracts.

I never said kill them. Just forcefully divide them of their valuables. We just captured a city, and it is customary to reap the benefits of such. Even a well disciplined army (such as the Romans, for example) pillage a town that they have conquered. Hell, I'm surprised our men haven't begun looting yet. It takes great amounts of restriction on the part of commanding officers to restrain their men. Our reputation won't suffer, as this is to be expected. this is not unheard of 'massacring the inhabitants' sort of thing. It is expected, almost, of the victor to take what he gained from the siege, and it usually increases the morale of the troops. If we make sure no harm comes to the inhabitants, then our reputation will probably increase, due to no blood shed among the civilians.

Loyalty - we're loyal to the Count whom we took the castle for, not the commoners within the walls. Our honor is to restrict the bloodshed, not restrict our men from taking the spoils of war. Besides, how will we pay our men? If we want to have enough money to recruit more, this is a good way of doing that. We'll get better contracts by getting results, and success. Not how we left the inhabitants of an enemy town to themselves. It's not as if we're here as an occupational force, or it may be different.

The person who's paying them.

Then let's ask the Count, and see if he gives two craps about us looting a town that he doesn't plan on occupying.

And what are you going to do when the civilians fight back? Tell our men not to kill the guy trying to cut them to pieces with wood axes and reaping scythes and pitchforks? If you try to rob them they will resist and some of them will be killed then wallah.

We're the evil mercenaries who roll into town and start murdering civilians to steal from them.

We want to get ourselves well known and offered better contracts and that won't happen if we make the population hate and or fear us and it's not about what the count does or doesn't care about. If he wants to be known as an asshole that's fine.
We need to be liked and trusted by the big guys to get the better jobs. Not bounce around the fringe on these tiny crap jobs because nobody can hire us because of our reputation. We got fair pay and we can loot the dead being greedy isn't going to help us.

Is it customary? Will this get us a bad reputation? We have no idea, because we don't know the legal and cultural situation in the setting.

On a slightly more practical note, what civilians are we supposed to be looting from?

I thought this was just a fort, not an actual town.

If the count wants to parley he'll do it himself, he's not going to ask his thugs to do it. That's embarrassing.

EDIT: Holy crap so we own the castle because we were first over? Maybe we really should take the keep on our own. Then the count wouldn't have any grounds for keeping it from us. And if we nab his enemy first that's a hell of a bargaining chip.

Sorry again, no update today either, but two things you ought to know, that I didn't make clear.

1: There is a town nearby, as the castle is the center of the Lord of Jeg's lands. It's located at the bottom of the hill, on the river. The castle itself is no city though.

2: Looting after a siege is firmly in the grey area of morality in this setting. Some lords simply won't allow it, others revel in it, most look the other way, and though not looting is seen as noble, it is not dishonorable to loot or likely to affect your reputation with employers unless you take it too far, as looting is definitely expected of mercenaries. Thus, it's largely up to how you see Cedric's morality to make the decision on whether he would or not.

Looting the castle itself sounds fine. I don't think anyone would have a problem with that. Looting the town itself is a no-no in my opinion though.

In advance, I was (semi) kidding about keeping the castle. I doubt either side would have any of it. Plus I think its far more fun to remain a wandering warband than to be tied down somewhere.

I agree, a good reputation will be useful for us.

This is the most important thing right now to be sure. Once we start gaining some recognition and the band is much bigger, then we can start influencing things. One side having us could sway an entire war if we play our cards right and get real tough and super badass, and then we can charge exorbitant rates and get ALL THE MONIES!
