(( That depends, let's try to gather some intel first. If we find a place to observe over the castle walls we can launch 1-2 feints. We lose nobody but they have to react assuming it's an attack.

Let's take this one step at a time. PewdsRocks is right, we should check it out before chickening out. We don't even know how big this castle is, and there's only thirty men besides. Let's speak to Sir Duncan about the garrison inside the castle. Any information about their arms or experience?

Once that's done, we ought to head to the edge of the forest with a small armed party and scout the castle. Check fortifications, material and height of the walls. Type and condition of the gate. Secondary fortifications like moats. How fortified is the canal running into the castle? Is it just a simple grate? Also what's the shape of the curtain? Is it an exact square? Are there towers or slits where the enemy can fire from?

EDIT: EDIT: Did the count specify a time limit?
+1 to intel gathering of all sorts, but seeing as how we're mercenaries, we should ask the occupants of the castle how much they'd pay us to switch sides. But be discrete about it, so our current employer doesn't get suspicious.

And yes, time limit was attack within three days.

Uhm ask them how? They'll shoot us if we get close enough and I don't think our allies are deaf. Besides we're honorable people we aren't going to sell out the people who hired us. Nobody would ever hire us ever again if they found out that we'll betray them.

Point 1: no they won't, not if we have a flag of truce, and if we go around the back of the castle our allies won't see us.
Point 2: honorable? That's what you think.
But you are right about the reputation loss, so we probably shouldn't accept the offer unless it is an unbelievable amount of money. As in, enough to buy out our current employer's entire kingdom, and fund ourselves into retirement.
But if he offered us that much, I would definitely suspect a trap, so either way, you're right, we probably shouldn't do it.

It wouldn't be much of a siege if all he had to do was walk out the back gate to escape us. ))

I think that scouting, and acquiring intel is the best for now, as we don't have to act for the next three days. My suggestion! come action time, is to build a series of 10 pavises, 1 for each pair of crossbow men. We then get within range of the gates, and use fire arrows to burn it down. Meanwhile, the other thirty would approach from the rear of the castle, and climb the walls using ladders and ropes. We then hold both the curtain wall and gate.

I don't think burning the gate would work.

It doesn't have to work. It's mainly a distraction for the second part of the plan. If it works, that's a bonus.

Then we could do that, and attempt to set buildings within the castle on fire, which is still a good distraction.

True but unless the person commanding the defense is stupid he won't move his sentries and your main force will be seen long before it reches the walls and be cut to pieces climbing it.

We've got lots of time to plan our attack and see what's up there, and no matter what we do rushing into it will probably get our forces cut to ribbons. It's also worth noting that we have 10 times the manpower they do, and we're for the most part better equipped. They don't know that our employer intends to let us do all the work, a sufficient show of force and a little attrition may well simply bring them to surrender.
