Bleak Freak?
« on: March 15, 2014, 09:06:40 pm »

After I adventured around with my 12 companions, I was told by the local Lord to hunt done a Bleak Freak. Does anyone know what that is and how hard it is to kill?

A Bleak Freak is likely a Night Troll. A randomly generated monster.

They may have wings or extra limbs that will make them a bit more difficult to deal with, or they may have something useless like a tail or a trunk.

There may only be one, or there may be a ton of them, depending on how old the world is. Night troll families tend to stick together, and may carry small weapons like meat cleavers or cooking knives.

Your best bet would be to lure it out of its lair instead of trying to fight inside, so that your companions have room to move around.

Exactly as Black Flyme said, I would like to warn that they are hard to deal with, live in groups, and your best chance is to surround them. Tough, since you have 12 companions you probably have a good dodging skill...

On top of all that, they feel neither pain nor fear, and they don't breathe. If you can't damage their brain, your best bet is to cut them until they bleed to death.

Also, they sometimes have horns. Get rid of those if you can.

I'd like to add a few point which I think others missed:

1. some might they have weapons (knives) - these are most dangerous. Wrestling weapons from them is a bad tactic due to their size advantage, so aim feet then hands to incapacitate them.
2. For whatever reason, they are much easier to bisect than regular humans.

This. Night creatures in general seem to have ridiculously narrow lower bodies. I'm not sure why. It gets particularly ridiculous when you fight a "bloated creep" or whatever and bisect him with a carving fork :P.

Also, there is pretty much no way of telling how hard or easy the fight will be. You may find yourself missing a few limbs and vital organs after just one troll massacres your friends, or you might steamroll the entire family.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Thanks for all the responses. Although my adventurer was later torn apart by a goblin ambush, the fight with the Bleak Freak was pretty easy given that I was able to bisect him within two rounds.

Is this why stabbing a bogeyman's lower body results in "the severed part flies off in an arc"?

Yup. The only night creatures that are not affected in my experience are vampires, seeing as they are still the original creature. Werebeasts are usually really big anyway, so it's hard to notice a difference in bisectability.

I find it easier to engage them if you can get outside. Since they are pretty large, charges in their narrow caves can be devastating. Even the fastest/toughest adventurer can be knocked into a wall and stunned. Much better to have room to dodge.
