Guilds are funky because they only let in 5 members, and take significant power to raise them to 10, and then 25.  So, there are currently 2 guilds, but neither has any vacancies.

Group play isn't totally in yet.  The devs are working on joint crafting and battle, but right now all battle is simply yourself plus your private companions.  There is sort of group building.  Mainly it's gathering massive resources and then constructing guild items.  Otherwise, the big thing is the trade between professions.  You trade your good leather to a good blacksmith, and the blacksmith gives you back a good tool.  So it's about networking and cooperating between different 'classes' of crafters.
