As for me - I've decided I want to raise my leadership a bit. The plan is to have two foresters, artisan, one combat guy...I'm not sure on the combat though. Primarily, I'll be using the guards to level up, but maybe as soon as I get the concession dump them there, pick up the guide again (which I discarded in favor of foresters and combat guy). Too bad companions stashed in your house still count towards your total maximum companion capacity, but then again if they wouldn't that would make them pretty OP.

So yeah, money-gathering activities stopped for a while and I spent most of the money I have on items and recruiting...hopefully I'll get myself a concession in a few days.

You can get scholars in the capital who are difficulty 9 and only cost 3s per round.

Too bad companions stashed in your house still count towards your total maximum companion capacity, but then again if they wouldn't that would make them pretty OP.

...hmmm, I am not really sure what I was trying to say here. I do know you can have more if you stash them (I mean, I was planning to stash combat guy and pick the guide, I've said it in the post)...I guess I got confused for a bit. I think I was actually trying to say "too bad stashed companions can't work when stashed" which I DO think is right? Or not?

I recently finished my first quest chain in Lanfar. The reward is a new companion that is actually quite decent: the Scout Torten

He might end up replacing both my guard and guide very shortly. The quests to get him aren't very long, but one part requires either 15 leadership, 20 taming or woodcutting or to fight a losing battle (4 Vargrs). It is a continuation of the Sor Choubard quest line, that starts in the visitor district of Hawkoria. I suggest that anyone having access to Lanfar and meeting the previously mentionned requirements (or feeling confident in their combat skills) to do this as soon as possible. Like Yraen, he is a quest companion and thus have fixed starting skills.

Yep, something like that. I had the same problem. So here is what I did:
- I bought some cheap tabard first, to raise my leadership
- tried to recruit the highest possible companion, based on level
- hopefully, that companion's level was high enough for me to raise my base leadership skill and defiance along with it
- repeat until you have 4 companions then sell the one you were recruiting (or the one you do not desire in general)
- now repeat the whole process again, either with the same companion, if that still raises your skill, or with some other, higher-leveled, if you can.
  If your level is too low, invest in better tabard.

Hope this helps.

edit: it should be noted that defiance specifically is tied to your "sociability" base trait. Just like any other trait, this raises as you raise one of it's skills, in this case leadership. This probably means you can raise it by also raising spying and commerce, but I'm not sure, never tried.
