More on companions:

Each character has 4 companion slots to start.  For premium currency (blue crowns), four more slots can be opened.  It is possible that characters in excess of four can be stored at a personal homestead location called a concession, but I have yet to verify the mechanics.

Character progression puts limits on recruiting companions.  Every character has an authority stat which is base leadership value without any modifiers.  Humanoid companions have a defiance stat.  Authority minus Defiance may not be less than zero.

Characters with the fauna skill also have a control stat.  Tamed animals have a ferocity stat.  Control minus Ferocity may not be less than zero.



Here's a basic companion, from the game guide.

(1) is the generic name, suitable for including in message board discussion
(2) is the portrait, which is the icon for interacting with the companion in game
(3) is the value of default skills, more on this in a moment
(4) is the list of skills that a companion has. Each type of companion has a tiny subset of the skills and stats available to a player character. 





This is how my companion looks in game.  Note the differences.  The list of skills (1) is the same.  Inspect the base values (3) some of them are lower than the default and some are higher.  It may be worth trashing a companion with low values across the board in favor of a shot at something better.  Therian Saga forums suggest that the random values are +/-3 

The current value (2) of skills can be increased by a maximum of 15 points.  To do this, the companion must be at your location while you perform a task using that skill.  Setting a companion to gather materials counts as not at your location.  As explained in other posts, the weighted average of Skill, Tool, Companion, and Location Bonus is used whenever a skill is checked.  Thus, a companion with a high skill may make up for deficiencies in other areas.

Companions higher than tier one are gated by "Wings" which are expert level craft actions in Hawkoria.  Some companions will only appear for recruitment at player constructed inns on player owned concessions.

When recruiting, each companion has a "presence" value from 0 to 100%.  This is supposed to represent the amount of time that companion spends at the recruitment location available to be influenced by the player.  As a practical matter, it means the player spends more actions recruiting a companion with low presence value.  Some identical companions may have different presence in different recruitment locations.

This is the reason I never do guides: I am way too lazy to do something that detailed and complete :-[

I can confirm that it is possible to store extra characters in a concession. Stored characters do not count toward the maximum companions count (4 without crowns) or for control/authority limits. You can only recruit/tame a new character if your current limits allow him/her/it to join you however.

Added myself to the spreadsheet, sorry for using so much space in notes, but potions seem a touch finnicky to give out to random people as payment!

Although I have been looking for more plants to see if I can't diversify the skill boosts on the potions I CAN make. Here's hoping they don't push the skill requirement for them too high.

While I'm here, does combat factor into any higher level stuff? Or is it just quest completion fodder? It kinda seems like it's just a distraction right now.

I've added also a complete map of the world, with all the places to discover.

I told you in my PM that the map DOESN'T have all the discoverable stuff.  It only lists locations before their latest big patch.

So, Anyone who ordered anything from me in game will end up waiting a while. I made my acc with my FB account and now all of a sudden myself and about a dozen other people aren't able to log into the game at all. -_-]


*Edit* Nevermind. They fixed it in like an fifteen minutes. Damn. These Dev's work fast. o.o I'm used to having that just be the end of me playing for a few days.

From what I understood, once you reach Lanfar there is a chance to have random encounter while travelling or gathering. I'm not sure if this is only for off-site areas (I assume) and if it is possible to avoid those by using companions for off-site gathering.

Yes you can, you can leave them there and monitor their progress off site, but you cannot take their produced goods until you meet back up with them.

Ah, I see! Good to know. I wonder if peolpe will be able to party up, would be neat if combat people could escort crafters into dangerous areas for mats or whatever.

As etgfrog said, it isn't currently possible. However, one of the dev mentionned that it is a planned feature here.

Edit: In fact, I plan to be focusing mostly on combat for a while, doing other stuff mostly during night. Despite the simple combat mechanics, I enjoy it more than spending 3 hours gathering before spending another 2 hours making stuff which then require to spend 2 hours resting. For some odd reasons, I prefer to play a game than just manage my character's progression :P

Alright, can someone explain the process step by step, I can't seem to get it to work.
