Edit: Also I would love to build or domain next to the ocean or river, 'cause shipyard.  Supposedly soon they'll be adding player made ships into the game.
Edit: Even though I'm not a carpenter, I can dream of a granite galley though.

Why not both? ;)

Edit: As in, both river and mountain.

Say, how do you improve your ability in different terrain? Does travel itself actually help? Or do you have to train, and if so, where?

I got the quest to find the ring in the forest, found the spot after 10 minutes of moving around, then discovered that my forest skill isn't high enough. What do I do about this? I keep seeing this all over the place. I want to be able to explore!

I think that gear is important for that, and also there seems to be trainers in some related places, for instance in the mines there is a "cave" trainer.

And ... yea I just confirmed it : doing stuff in a type of place will skill it up naturally : my "cave" skill went up from mining in a cave. But keep in mind that different things matter, not just your own skill. For instance, your forest skill is made up of 40% equipment bonuses, 30% your own skill, 20% camp bonuses, 10% from your companions, and magic bonuses appear to apply on top of that at 100% power.

Just a quick note on that, the contribution percentage for each bonus category is determined by your highest score. For example, if you raise your own forest skill above your equipment bonus, the contribution of each would be the other way around in your example (40% own skill, 30% equipment).

Yeah, I'm liking the game overall, but I'm seriously disliking all the math involved. I don't see any reason why skills have to be so complicated. Want to make equipment and such really valuable? Great. Make it a bonus. Let me have my base skill, and just add bonus points from the other stuff. Why do I have to do percentages to figure out what the hell my skill is? It took me ages to understand why the game was telling me X skill had risen to 7, while in my character window it showed only 2.

I'm mostly ignoring the math. It's just easier on my sanity.

I tried to do that, but then I kept getting told that my skills weren't high enough to do things that looked simple. My skills were plenty high enough, of course, but I didn't have the equipment and companions and magic effects for it to matter. You could grind at a skill for weeks on end and it would still never get very high unless you search around for the correct piece of equipment and spend money on it.

And that also bothers me. When I asked in the game why my skill wasn't high enough, everyone asked "do you have the guide  yet?' "do you have the tabard yet?" I hate it when a game is so formulaic like that. So everyone has the same equipment and there's no room for individuality. Then it just become a grind fest and a wiki and not a game at all. I do hope it's possible for players to make equipment that gives bonuses, otherwise I might not last long in this game after all. It's just a Facebook-ized World of Warcraft game where the grinding is done without you even having to be there to press the buttons.

Unfortunately, optimal strategies emerge because some players are powergamers and some of those like to share their tricks with everyone else, and everyone wants to reduce grind by using those tricks.

If your skill was a base + bonues from gear etc. it would be easier to read, yes. But you would still end up with a surcoat that raises mining or whatever, and all the miners would be walking around in the surcoat.

Alternatives include:

Not giving stat modifiers for anything that other players can see (like clothes) but add it for items they can't see (like rings, spells, etc.)

Having multiple stats that apply to different tasks - for example if you encounter a Goblin you want the weapon that will do the most damage in one hit, to kill it immediately. If you encounter a swarm of rats you want a weapon that does just enough damage to kill a rat but swings as fast as possible. Against a heavy-armor opponent you want a weapon that pierces armor because it has higher overall DPS despite it being relatively low DPS against unarmored opponents. Against flying creatures or those with high movement you might prefer weapons that force them to stop moving (bolas, net, freeze ray) or missile weapons which otherwise do lower DPS but are the easier option when the opponent keeps away from you.

Having huge varieties of equipment, possibly randomized, so that people are looking out for an item with the Bone Saw enchantment rather than a specific Jewel of the Bone Saw which only drops from one boss in one dungeon in the whole world.

A combination of these three, and possibly other ideas that I can't think of off the top of my head, would result in a game where characters could wear just about anything and be optimally effective in whatever job, but still allow people to explore and acquire cool equipment which helps them.

Are there any other games similiar to Therian Saga? They don't have to be browser games, and yes, I already know about The Guild games.  Next.  8)

Unreal world kind of? Except it's more towards survival than production and commerce.

The guide question was for a boost to your terrain skills in case you were trying to working in terrain that you were unable to, One of the biggest things is having a tool for the job and a skill level up to what is needed, a companion does help but if you have 3 out of the 4 things then you have 90% of it. Easiest way of seeing it is hoving your mouse over the skill in question on your character sheet, it should give you info as to what you need or what you could do to improve it. A way of thinking about it is a master crafter cant work very well without a good set of tools, a good enviroment and possibly a 2nd opinion through the difficult parts.

So after getting a good stag I tried mushroom cave again...quite a bit easier this time.

So after spending some time trying to find potion flasks, I can see finding enough to keep training up herbalism is gonna be an issue I think. What labor makes flasks? If there is one?
