That will help so much in knowing which materials to use for machines. Now to start hunting the best material for some Wood/Metal/Fauna workshops.

I'm working on Engineering right this moment.  I could probably fairly easily come up with a list for every machine of the top 5 materials for each part.

EDIT: I finished the maths for an Engineer's Desk:
Wood has Imputrescibility:
1: Melandrin at 42
2: Nuertesilicio at 35
3: Cedar at 30

Stone as Impermeability:
1: Oceanite at 53
2: Marapis at 45
3: Palvable at 40
4: Valcanite and Iriandanil at 35
5: Lithosnow at 30
6: Slate at 25

Glass has Optical, Transparency, and Finesse, of which I count each in equal weight:
1: Volrizia at 176
2: Lansferum and Marapidos at 102
3: Catoblar at 85
4: Doctarius at 80
5: Krisental at 75

Metal has Finesse:
1: Gold at 48
2: Kyranroc at 43
3: Blueroc at 40
4: Eliandel and Odiemel at 25
5: Brass and Silver at 20

Locally and easily?  20 Cedar Planks, 5 Slate Blocks, 10 Doctarius Glass, and 5 Brass.

Thats awesome news. Kind of wishing I held off on getting the machine last night. Oh well come time for an upgrade I'll have more info at hand for picking the best mats.

As someone working on woodworking, does either guild need anything made of wood? What should I be working towards to benefit B12?

I wouldn't mind some 40 or 60 cedar planks, willing to provide blades to that end as well.  That'll help produce 2 or 3 engineer's desks.

So...  I'm a Fauna(Hunter).  I've got a pet rabbit, a little tamer girl and will soon have a Hulbor(Wolf).

Name in-game name is Jayle.

I am working on getting my workshop built so I will need the woodworking machine at some point, what ever machine that is. I will jump on steam chat tonight and see if I can fill some plank orders and stuff.

I'm also working on setting up my workshop, but I have a machine bought already (simple copper sawmill, no mill tho). I could probably help with the plank orders.

A couple of things about woodworking and the wood skills which I've tried to phrase a few times so to heck with it:
+ Planks are created with woodcutting, not woodworking, but they are valuable due to their many uses (machines and selling on the market, making a bunch of stuff).
+ Low level woodworking doesn't really make anything that's in demand - good shields will sell well and clogs are okay, but creating good furniture takes a lot of skill as far as I can tell (and I don't know if anyone from bay12 is really after good furniture yet). You might be able to sell a couple of bowls (cedar ones have remarkably high stats).
+ Carpentry is useful as well, but most of the base level building components can be bought and higher level ones don't seem to be needed until you reach Lanfar (which only a handful of us have). I believe there's at least one component there was a bit of demand for, though, when Watchers of the Bay were making the ten members structure.

My first Home is up and sort-of running.
Expansion is expensive. Good job I saved up a few gold before starting.

Yeah, I suggest people get to at least 2 gold for their first concession.  With out the extra 40 silver you can't even build a tent.

That depends. Do you need the concession because you have hit a wall in your grind or do you need a home for extra companions?

I used it as storage for companions for several days before it seemed worthwhile adding a workshop to continue my woodwork grind (unless I'm missing something there is no way to grind past 22 woodcutting on Hawkoria materials/trees alone). It let me grind up a full contingent of foresters to have 24/7 log or hunting income, start building a combat/dungeon team and keep other handy companions (guide, page) for future use.

The base cost is more than worth it for that.

I get blades in Turnbull woodcamp - fir logs + firewood. Granted, I did have to buy the later on the market few times as you need 20 of it for a single blade.
Your method does seem more profitable though, if we dismiss the starting investment in hunting. Will think about doing that, thanks.

I'm mostly assuming this as a given cost. Fauna is damn near required to learn as it gives you taming, close to mandatory for dungeoneering. Many (most?) worthwhile combat companions are beasts, and it lets you split your companion capacity between your authority and dominance and have more high-value companions than sticking to either of them. Hunting is easy to get on the side, nicely profitable, and the fish only requires 6. A baseline Forester will always beat 6 hunting, so can be left to fish immediately after recruitment.

The fir and firewood trade is more time consuming to gather deliberately (fastest source of 20 firewood averages to 51:04) and actually higher base value goods (20c vs 25c, so not vast difference) which also have actual uses elsewhere. That said, if you have the surplus and absolutely no blades it's not the worst thing you can do with them, but I wouldn't make the trade in bulk.

I would recommend finding a metal worker, as we can easily turn a firewood into ~ 3 to 5 tin blades. I am unavailable for a few days, sadly.

Tin blades are fairly useless in comparison to copper, unless you're doing things with fir. Maybe cedar, I haven't tried. Normal copper is cheaper and effective if you're worknig on cedar; High Quality Copper blades on the other hand, can chop up to pine logs (I think maple too, if you have enough mech. strength supporting them) logs if you've got at least Turnbull Mill or better woodcutting location, with a bronze axe (or better), and a companion, or do a variety of useful woodcutting/working/carpentry tasks with said woods. Very useful things, they are.
