If they ever do Icelandic, I'm totally in. I had an Icelandic friend in university who tried to teach me a bit, but she lost interest pretty quickly because she was too busy playing on the school soccer team and learning German. It's a cool language. Just as complicated as Latin, but sounds nicer.

Also, acetech: your language is hilarious, and it will be a good while before I can speak it in front of other people without giggling. I, uh... I mean that in a good way.

On a related note, my last sentence on Duolingo was "Du dricker min katts mjölk." (You're drinking my cat's milk.)

Me neither. What appeals to me about this program is that it's a bit more social than straight-up study tools. I always prefer and recommend immersion if possible. Even if it doesn't involve travel, like my (albiet bad) example:

I apprenticed under a Porsche mechanic who knew conversational English but always had to use German names for technical components. This ends up in a weird position where my German conversational skills are nonexistent but I have a good German vocabulary in very techy mechatronics and computers.

It is important to be a nerd in as many languages as possible.

Yeah, Duolingo is great for that little bit of extra practice, and comparing your score to other people gives you that motivational boost. It's not great for speaking, but I've found it excellent for reading and writing, and general vocabulary and grammar building. I still use it to brush up on my German regularly. I was fluent 5 years ago, but moved to Prague, where there aren't many German speakers. Haven't hardly used German since then, but I'm always amazed by how much I can remember when I do a Duolingo practice session. Keeps me from rusting through altogether.

I'm trying dutch. i figure i should learn it sense i have so many dutch relatives. the spelling is the hardest part. why must every word have j's and z's in it!

Signed up, starting easy, brushing up my decades-old German, then going to pick up Spanish, and wait for Russian to be complete. I wish there were more non-European languages to pick from though.
