PTW: No links to this? (Can't do searchengines well at this moment in time) but given all I read here? Pretty interesting learning European languages.

Is there Latin?
Duolingo.com

There is no Latin; just Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian.
Thank you muchly. Spanish/German, here I go!

Arx: I can understand written Dutch, at least I can get the gist of it - and if they speak slowly, I can understand the spoken language too (to a degree). Plus I'm pretty sure it's easier the other way around.

Of course, understanding Dutch might be more difficult to someone who didn't grow up (sort of) close to the Netherlands.

The thing is, I don't know of many people from the Czech republic living in the English speaking world. I know of a whole load of Polish people though.

I am signed up for German. Ich bin ein Berlinner, here we come!

Edit: wow, they've game-ified this well. I'm signed up as Arxian, for those who care.

I am from Slovakia, and I also would go "Why?" if anyone told me he wanted to learn Slovak. Czech is a teeny bit better for it (10M to 5M speakers). Not even some Slovakians know how to speak it (mainly from the southern parts).

The only thing going for it, is that even if many people here speak English/Russian, they don't speak it well (example here, it's our former minister of transport). So if you want to communicate with someone at passable level you need Slovak.

But in Prague, that is so not the case. Anyone there knows english and probably one more language because of all the foreign tourists.

But learn any slavic language and almost all Slavs will understand.

Yeah, that's a dialect thing. I can read a Dutch newspaper and understand maybe half of it, but I have a hard time understanding Dutch when it's spoken.

Not that bad an accent, listen to the English of some of our politicians.  ;)

I should probably improve my German as well, but every German I know speak Dutch almost fluently.

It also might trigger highschool flashbacks :P

Seems like we need a Benelux Bay12 meetup. Does German become intelligible to Dutch people when spoken really loudly?

Yes, but I've had 5 years of highschool German which helps a little.

I couldn't speak or write it to save my life though. At least not very well :P

OK, this is good, but I'm going to need you to say your lines happier, and open your mouth really really wide.

Is a language with accent marks better than one that lacks them - but still has hidden pronunciation requirements? I think English is some bogus crap sometimes.
