Mini Metro - fight back overcrowding!
« on: March 10, 2014, 01:27:21 pm »

Check out this puzzle game: you have to arrange metro lines to ferry passengers to their destination, with each passenger wanting to go to a specific symbol

game starts easy:

and gets out of control fairly quickly.

Very smooth graphics and controls. Every game-week you get some bonus as more lines, bigger cars or more tunnels

Some symbols are common, some are rarer creating choke point around your network

Huh. So it's like 18xx with it's limited tile set.

Looks like your strategy was a hub-and-star topology, right?  I can't tell what you did under the Game Over box, but you don't have any rings in the parts I can see.

And it looks like you had at least two smaller hubs instead of a Grand Central Station.  I see that green, yellow, and cyan had a hub on the left side, and I'm guessing that green, cyan, and blue had a hub at center screen.

For giggles, give this a shot:

I would like to point out that, according to every over-ground public transport aside from buses, connecting things by straight lines is a Good Idea™.

See: Trains. Dublin's Luas system. Other tram systems.

Dublin luas is awful and transit in general a pain if you live not near the city center (i know, I moved from Milan to Dublin so I have a reference to compare :) )

Anyway. I was going for a 'connect as many type as possible of nodes on each line' to reduce hubs. Doesn't scale so well as car go slower the more crowded stations are.

It looks there is going to be a balancing update around the corner.

Meanwhile I'll try the circular line as you say

The limited river crossing became an issue for me.

I'd like to see more lenient difficulties/sandbox modes that would allow me to play long-term games while running it in the background, and more upgrade diversity I guess. Otherwise, I kind of love this and I want it on my phone so I can play it at work. :P

I wouldn't mind a sandbox mode, to be honest. Part of the fun is making a massive convoluted train system, after all.

Anyways, any tips for building an efficient metro-way? I like making lots of overlapping circles, but I'm certain that better designs exist.

Nice game, but controls can sometimes be somewhat annoying. Especially when the system insists on making a tunnel under the river, rather than just letting the train go alongside.

This is really neat, but it really needs a time control. A 2x for when everythgin is running smoothly, and a .5x or even pause for when there is major rewiring to be done.

What's the best strategy? I can't get past 350.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

this is my best run so far...

a friend of mine turned me onto this game a few days ago, its really well made, simple rules that lead to complex behaviours
I also absolutely adore the subtle zooming out effect.

My strategy is to minimise the amount of river crossing I have to do, I have 1 loop setup solely to do rivercrossing and then use my remaining lines to set up loops on either side of the river.

I've found that its a good idea to keep your last line in reserve so you can quickly drop it down when a station is overcrowded. I prefer extra lines over other upgrades, and then I like train upgrades over station upgrades. (station upgrades go onto the river crossing hubs)

edit: forgot to spoiler the image
