\despite having a GBA (which now resides not gathering dust but as a memento on the shelf u_u)
Tsk.  I'm still getting mileage out of my GBC.  I'd be playing with my GBA SP but I need to get one of those goddamn Y-screwdrivers so I can replace the batteries in my game cartridges.

@_@
Batteries in...game cartridges!? The only problem with my GBA SP (ol' Silver) is that it...somehow can't retain any memory of saved games.
...Perfect for iron man modes in many games. Yet all I've got are RPGs >_<
Ahahaha Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. No death run. Haa...
I wonder if it's still possible to get it working after...8 years?

My dad still plays Tetris on my original Game Boy.  That thing is old enough to buy booze now.

And how do you think those old game cartridges retain those saved games?  Well, certain games.  Any game with a clock function in it needed a battery, and apparently some GBA games from 2002 and earlier used SRAM which requires a battery to keep the data saved.  Here's a (possibly incomplete list) of GBA games that need a battery:

 - Baseball Advance
 - Boktai 1, 2 and 3 (JP)
 - Bomberman Tournament
 - Breath of Fire
 - Breath of Fire II
 - Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
 - Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance
 - Dragonball Z Collectible Card Game
 - Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak
 - Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
 - Krazy Racers
 - Lego Bionicle
 - Lego Island 2: The Brickster's Revenge
 - MegaMan Battle Network
 - MegaMan Zero
 - Metroid Fusion (Only some use a battery)
 - Metroid Zero Mission
 - Monster Rancher Advance
 - Monster Rancher Advance 2
 - Pokemon Emerald (Not for saving, but for other game events)
 - Pokemon Ruby (Not for saving, but for other game events)
 - Pokemon Sapphire (Not for saving, but for other game events)
 - Super Dodgeball Advance
 - Warioland 4

The fun part is replacing it.  Due to non-standard screws and the goddamn battery being soldered in  >_<

Mmph :S None of those I have, have batteries.
Also...err, I really don't know why the save games get wiped. I take care of my cartridges; lasted me...around more than half of the time I had it. It died around ~3 years ago approximately.
...That or I never got to charge it right. Seemed like the charger died.

My dad still plays Tetris on my original Game Boy.  That thing is old enough to buy booze now.
You're very awesome.
And your dad is very awesome.
...GB Color? @_@ That's the earliest version of the Game Boy I know (Color > Advance > SP...anyway)

There is one version earlier than color; just called the 'game boy', it has obviosly only three shades of grey, all with a green tint.

Still running strong.

Also, there was the gameboy pocket which came before the gameboy colour. Nowadays I'd just emulate GBA games on my phone.

Nothing can bring back my 72(or so?) Yoshi eggs from Super Mario Advance in the GBA. NOTHING!
Unless you consider the hours put into it >__>

But seriously: argh ._.
The unfun thing for me is you remember the memories, but the darn NAME of the game! :-\

My blue Gameboy pocket is the oldest handheld that I have that still works.  I had two of the original Gameboys, but they both had the screen die on them.

No, wait, I take that back.  Apparently the Atari Lynx came out before the Gameboy pocket.  So that's the oldest working handheld I have.

The emulator that I used to play those games was bugged and couldn't save, so I had to play through KH: Chain of Memories and Bleach: Dark Souls without saving.
I know those feels.

Still going strong on a Gameboy Color, though the sound is borked.

Only have Pokemon Yellow on it, that I've beaten at least 6 times.

I still have my gameboy colour in the left drawer of my desk- haven't played on it in a while, but it's pretty good for when there are blackouts.

Do you hold the flashlight in your teeth when playing then?
