That's a 'excuse me how did you get away with that' moment if I've ever seen one.
I think I remember that Urist said that they would change it if it wasn't okay, so it's pretty much on me.

Though most of my games are open or semi-open, I've been working on a closed-setup I'm calling Nomic Bastard Mafia in which there are additional hidden rules, some of which begin distributed among the players. It's ready to play (as is the CYOM Redux) but alas I'm too busy right now and there's already games in the queue!

I see.

One of the sillier ideas for a mafia game I've had is a game designed to be as 'gotta go fast' as possible. 24 hour days, 0 hour nights - all actions must be queued up during the day and are then immediately executed when the day ends. Could be absurd with the right setup structure, but also a lot of work for the mod.

I mean, if we wanna talk about that, some other boards say "yeeted" instead of "lynched." This is fundamentally a game about mob violence.

PS: Rysith's was great. I want the Nomic Bastard.

Been stalking MU games or just generally aware of the larger mafia community zeitgeist?

Nomic will happen this year. The longer I leave it, the more byzantine optional rules I'll think up anyway.

I've often thought about the uncomfortable use of "lynch"-- In fact when I explain the game to people IRL I always use a different word like "removed" or "exiled" or something with less, uh, overtones.

Huh. Never really thought about it before. Although I don't think I've ever had anyone literally lynched as the flavor in my games. Nor do I usually refer to people being lynched as a mod, I don't think. But now I'm wondering how often I use the word in my games.

It is a bit of a problematic word, though. I'll try to pay more attention in the future.

I saw that lynch was being removed from mafia communities for reasons.

For example Mafiascum changed every instance of lynch to eliminate so you have stupid shit like Elo to describe lylo.

I disagee with this decision.

1. As anon players on a forum, we have no visual or audial cues to discriminate each other. If somebody was being an idiot anyway and using derogatory slurs they'd get banned off the forum for breaking the guidelines.
2. What if my name was David Lynch? Is my name banned?

I think when it's a "witch/werewolf"-style game, hanging/lynching is literally the action. When it's a different setting, probably best to stick with the setting.

I was just reading through the role list for that game, seeing all the various types of wizards, and suddenly Urist Imiknorris is the grand wizard of the KKK.

Wow, yeah. On one hand, reading that sentence is hilarious. On the other, ridiculing evil people is probably good (see: South Park). On the third... yeah, it's probably best to approach with caution/much forethought.

Yep, I think reasonable people can understand context and nuance, including in humor and in the game context.
OTOH, if there are many people against it on a particular forum, I see it being a decision to more easily moderate: if the topic doesn't come up, you don't have to spend time figuring out whether someone's a racist PoS or not.

I'm not super familiar with the mafia world beyond here and MU, but MU's ultimate decision was to change the generally used term to eliminate (which frankly I prefer anyway because it applies to a much broader number of flavors) but not ban any specific term for the elimination. Which ultimately led to the evolution of "yeet" as a secondary term for it because "miseliminating" is a mouthful but "misyeeting" is great fun.

I don't think its necessarily derogatory, like a slur, but it's just that the word is more evocatively violent than necessary and it evokes a kind of violence that historically was used against a racialised group in several countries.

It's perhaps an appropriate word for anti-werewolf medieval styled games, but not all games.

Thinking about it, there are other words we wouldn't use in flavour for somilar reasons.

I agree changing the word also has this cumbersome knock on effect on other words we use and indeed I've continued to use it on the forum.

That's actually all good points. For me, it seemed to be about differentiating between players eliminated by voting versus eliminated by player actions. Lynch vs. kill. But, lynch does have a negative connotation to it...

Maybe I'll replace lynch with defenestrate. It's a better word, and something a mob could easily perform.

YEET OR LOSE is so close to YOLO that it becomes tempting to use indeed.

The specific word isn't that big a deal, as long as it's clearly separate from "kill" in terms of the mechanic.  The side lingo that uses it is the biggest casualty, but that'd evolve over time.  I see no issue with phasing it out as a courtesy.

Dang it. On the one hand, that's hilarious.

On the other hand, no.

I think my personal preference for a substitute to lynch would be... execute. Still conveys that touch of brutality that mafia feels like.

Doesn't mean we have to stop using LYLO or whatnot, though.

notquitethere: Any chance of an ending to Puzzle Temple Panic?

Additionally, one more thing I'd like to point out is that I've... almost never actually been town in the mafia games I've played. Looking at the wuba games? Mafia, outsider, mafia. I think I was a traitor in Puzzle Temple Panic. I played in Bring Your Own Song - I was mafia. The only time I can actually remember being town was in that C9++ or whatever it was setup, where I was a town tracker. The rest of the time? Scum and villainy.

Clone Lord mafia? I was the Clone Lord cult leader. Sequel to that game? Mafia.

Tomasque's Exquisite Cops and Robbers? Evil role - True Name Eater.

Why am I never town, damn you all.

(Apparently I was town in Mind Reading Mafia, but I didn't even remember playing that one until I dug into my old PMs)

I'm now imaging a Defenestration Mafia set-up. Maybe set at the top of a sky scraper that's blocked off for some reason.

I bet I could rig a Paranormal for that flavor somehow...
