Such issues are often because it literally IS cool to shut off. Modern computer have thermal sensors on the components and will shut themselves down if they detect severe overheating which would otherwise melt the component. For an older computer, this overheating is usually caused by neglect, as the internals (particularly the CPU) need a fairly regular dusting out. Dust builds up and essentially forms a lovely layer of fuzzy fur on the components, resulting in overheating. Software that tells you temps (I use HWMonitor CPUID myself) will let you know if this is the issue.

Otherwise, it could be a bad power supply or other part.

Do this first:
1. Run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware to scan for virusses (MBAM is the best AV out there, and the scanner is completely free)
2. Update drivers

If it keeps happening... You may want to see what you recently installed and try disabling programs from running at startup.

Dusting does not always help if the thermopaste's burnt out. You may have to replace it. If I were you, I'd attribute the whole deal to overheating.

Thermopaste is the stuff that goes between your fan and your processor to increase thermal dissipation by filling in the gaps between the components.

Cost should be less than $10, depending on where you get it.

Generally should be easy to replace; just remove the 'sink, and rub the stuff on the part that touches your fan.

Well, some computer designs can do without fans if they'd don't do anything troubling, but in most cases your fans should work.

Broken fan can explain overheating.

Not sure if it would help but if you have a room fan for hot days you could try pointing it into your computer's casing and see if it makes a difference.

Yes, it can, in fact. The 97° are your problem here. If it's processor temp, of course. If you're lazy, you can probably go to a computer repair shop and snivel about it. They are usually able to do something.
