The 501st S.C.A.T regiment is the first regiment of it's kind consisting of only 20 men. It's the brain child of retired general Matias Horgren a renowned military genius who commanded the Assault troopers throughout much of the initial fighting with the pirates until old age and illness forced him to retire.
Since that time, the 501st regiment has gone from the limelight of military reports fading once more into obscurity, as the lack of a pressing need for ground troops in the aftermath of the rebellions, with most colonies back into the fold with garrison units able to keep the peace upon those worlds. Without such a need for dedicated assault infantry funding for the regiment, and other units like it shrunk considerably to the point most units were skeletal compared to their glory days.

Using every ounce of influence his reputation for sound judgement and standing with the armed forces provided him he was able to convince the admiralty the admiralty into funding an experiment, an attempt take foot slogging infantry and bring about the future of the assault troopers. This resulted in the 501st space capable assault troopers. 2 commanding officers were selected both women who had served under him personally and had never failed to follow orders and get the job done no matter the cost. The kind of soldiers who would go further then anybody could ever expect to prove that S.C.A.T could work. Or who would die trying in the attempt.

They then selected 18 of the best and brightest soldiers they could find, men and women who were known for volunteering for the kind of jobs that would cause most people to resign and having a strong sense of initiative the kind of people who would not hesitate to walk out an airlock in the middle of a firestorm between warships to fly across the void and assault a warship. In short, the kind of people who stare death in the face then sucker punch it just for good measure. They were equipped with a new experimental set of fully self contained powered carapace armor equipped with internal air supply and thrust packs and had them trained by the best pilots they could find to give them a new and unique edge that no other infantry force would posses. The ability to pilot fighter craft in defense of warships or landing craft for full scale invasion was a strong selling point with the admiralty.

Each squad contains 5 Assault troopers equipped as me.
2 Assault medics who carry a Grenade launcher rather then cannon.
2 Engineers who carry a Plasma Stinger instead of cannon. ( A guided RPG firing plasma tipped rockets. )
Medics carry a med kit rather then a breaching charge.
Engineers carry a repair kit rather then a breaching charge and wrist mounted data jacks for hacking.

History: Jesmia is a veteran assault trooper who took part in multiple covert operations during the human civil war without failure and became one of her generals most trusted officers. When the war ended infantry battles dwindled rapidly as all combat took place between space craft and she was assigned to protect a colony in the middle of nowhere from non existent enemies until finally she was offered the chance to lead a squad of experimental soldiers and jumped at the chance to escape the monotonous life of a garrison trooper.

You can if you want. It's not necessary. Just note that they must have standard gear for normal security. Which is pretty much laser weapons and medium armor.
