Dwarves won't recover......
« on: March 07, 2014, 07:18:34 am »

I first noticed this when one of my civilians  was still resting after over a year, despite having minor injuries, now 2 years later he ist still resting and doing nothing altough he isn't injured anymore ._. .

But in the meantime there are like 8 dwarves or so, resting for all eternity, but they are not severly wounded...

I haven't noticed this before, is this a bug?

What are their wounds? They may rest forever if you have 'diagnosis' resulting in something like 'bone setting' and have no bonesetters around. Also stupid diagnosts like to put up the wound dressing, which would stagnate the other parts of curing process in case you are short on cloths. Also you may have them 'rest' in a table or traction bench: just deconstruct it.
Also you may have them 'rest' due to not having any soap available ('cleaning' diagnost request)

Whenever i read the "doesn't care about anything anymore" line, i instantly imagine a dwarf, sitting alone on a swing set. Just slowly rocking back and forth, somberly staring at the ground, and stopping every once in a while to sigh.
It's mildly depressing.

the wound screen shows all areas white on some of them, they only have scars left.  i don't know much about healing in DF yet, so i don't know how to set these things.

Some also broke something or lost a limb, but i remember those with one limb going back to work aswell in previous fortresses.

install dwarf therapist, connect to df, look at 'health' part of first screen. it should have enabled jobs in at least 1 of each column (blue is activated, red is inactive in health): diagnosis, bone setting, suturing, wound dressing, and 2 more, not remember now.
Also select your wounded dorf with 'v' key, press z, press h. This would open up the health screen with multiple tabs, one of which would have a list of finished health procedures & 1 would be a list of appointed health procedures. If I'm correct no dorf will get out of the hospital til the procedures would be done.

Wow, thank you for the tipp with v-z-h it's very helpful!

I just saw now, that they lost the ability to stand, and some of them have nerve damage.
Can i heal that somehow ? Is nerve damage repairable? ( I guess not) and how can I kill the unproductive dwarfves? :>

PS: I know this doesn't belong here, but is there a possiblity to measure the temperature in my fortress or in the surroundings?

I just saw now, that they lost the ability to stand, and some of them have nerve damage.

If they are still resting, there's some healthcare procedure they're still waiting for. In .34.11, dwarfs will not stay in bed forever, they _want_ to be productive.

Go through the tabs in the health screen, there's a treatment plan in there, check that and do whatever it takes to get the treatment finished. Dwarfs are only invalids if they get _off_ the beds and still have status problems like cannot stand or cannot grasp. If they are in bed with such an indicator, it's entirely possible that treatment will remove the problem.

Make sure you have all healthcare labours covered; there should be at least two dwarfs for every such labour. If one labour is missing (bone setting, suturing, surgery, diagnosis, wound dressing), treatment will get stuck there and never finish.

I suspect the problem's something very simple like lack of crutches or a missing healthcare profession.

P.S. Traction benches are a possibility, but i have strong doubts that traction will account for multiple dwarfs resting forever (OP mentioned "like eight or so"; even if that's overstated, four dwarfs all stuck in traction at the same time are implausible in the extreme).

Check to see if any of the dwarves in question are on traction benches. Sometimes traction benches bug out and won't release dwarves even when they're done healing. To fix, just deconstruct the traction bench.

I recall a workaround for some situation where one destroys the bed the dwarf is resting on. I forget when exactly you do that, but it might help here.

Do you guys know how liver, spleen and pancreas damage are affecting the dwarf in the long term? :o
has anyone tested it yet already?

+1 to giving this a try if you already have tables, traction benches, and doctoring labors covered. I have seen medical treatment bug out like this frequently where the only solution was to force-remove beds (which resulted in a healthy dwarf returning to the labor pool).

It is thought that organs have no set function yet, though wounds to the heart are almost inevitably fatal due to bloodloss.

injure of lungs is bad (lungs have functions of breathing)
All other internal organs could lead to death only from bloodloss.

Nerve damage is not reparable, but with a crutch they will be as productive as any other dwarf. Once their crutch-walking skill is at legendary, they will actually move faster than before due to the agility gain.

The problen is that they have not been given a crutch is all this time, with either means that the diagnosis bugged and they were not issued one (In which case, euthanasia is the best option), that they have lost grasp capacity, or that you have not crutches disponible.

Check the clinical history and see if they are waiting for crutches, and make some if that is the case.

Pro-tip: Make platinum or gold crutches, they are nice weapons to have.
