What FPS do you consider still playable?
« on: March 07, 2014, 07:05:55 am »

I wonder.
I have a kind-of mental border of ~ 20fps, at which game starts being frustrating.

It's mildly depressing.

I consider around 30-50 FPS to be about typical, but on my old computer, the current fort FPS was getting into the low 20s, high 10s.

That said, I'd consider FPS into the 20s and 10s for very long periods of time to be unplayable and onset of FPS death.

5 fps. Maybe less.

The fortresses are penal colonies.
The mountainhome has far too many degenerates too deal with by itself, so it sends out minor nobles to establish penal colonies across the world.

5 fps. Maybe less.

Well, FPS in the 10s is marginally playable and over a very long period of time I would consider onset of FPS death.

Around 7-8 fps. I actually keep my FPS capped at 15 so my playstyle doesn't have to vary too much between early fort and late fort.

(I like to keep my fortress chugging along in the background while I'm working).

For adventure mode, 35. My preferred FPS for adventure mode is 4300+ though.

For fortress, I consider 40-50 to be acceptable, 15 is the slowest I like the FPS to get.

I can deal with anything as low as 3-5 FPS, normally, but I dont have that problem as much anymore because I splurged on an awesome processor and my patience with fortress mode has waned to where I can't pay attention at all.

I personally touch on 15FPS sometimes; that is when I start killing Steam, bringing down the WLAN, and stopping the Audio Service. I usually start with DFHack-based FPS optimizations* if I hit 20-25 though, and pathing-based optimizations at 30-40.

* destroying objects, murdering FBs/clowns with obsidian, etc.

At 30 FPS I begin doing FPS optimizations and cleanup.  Pathing settings, item destruction/removal, etc.

At 20 FPS I begin contemplating what novel I'm going to read while I play.

At 10 FPS the fort is consumed in a firey wrath of god and a new fort is erected.

Personally I have a similar threshold to the above posters (i.e. around 10-20 fps) but as soon as the fort enters in assured entropic decline, I crank up fastdwarf. Otherwise it would take a real-time week to complete a thing that can be done in a couple of hours, and sometimes I just want fortresses to last that long a period of time.

Why shouldn't you write with a broken pencil? Because it's pointless!

Thinking about this lately, and it depends on how much I like my fort. At 20fps I better really like the little guys or have some big project I want to complete

I think my slowest fort ran at around 8 fps.

My magma pump stack drained it to less than one frame per second. I let it run overnight and unpaused it whenever I woke up while a reservoir filled.

In fortress mode, 20+ is okay.

In adventure mode, 1 is fine. XD

Well, it's prone to crashing at about 5fps and that makes it pretty unplayable so...
