Mystery Mining Deaths
« on: March 06, 2014, 11:08:45 am »

First thread on this forum, whoop.

Well, I recently have been messing around with the masterwork mod, so I've not had much experience with it. Saying that, I have been playing vanilla for some time, so I know how things 'should' work.

However, when playing a recent masterwork game, I tried to dig out some rooms for my dwarves, and one of my miners just dropped down dead. Just like that.

Although I thought this was odd, I carried on - and my second miner died within a minute of gameplay.

So, at this point I go searching on the internet, and come across black lung - which could be it, because the area is filled with lignite. So, to try and determine what is happening, I send a third miner down, who continues to mine the room, and within less than thirty seconds, he's suddenly gasping, and then he drops down dead, just after mining some graphite.

I was under the impression black lung would take slightly longer to affect a dwarf, rather than them just drop down dead as soon as they lift up their picks... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Did they mine Warp Stone(you get a message about exploding warp stone if they hit unstable one)? Or inhale dust from mining coal, since you say they were mining. Other than that, maybe a syndrome from outside if it's an evil biome?

Unfortunately, I had no messages at all with any of the deaths - nor any reports.

Its not an evil biome either, and no fb's on the map.

I suppose it might be coal, but I thought it would take more time than the ten seconds it does for them to mine a block and then just drop down dead... The only blocks in the area are lignite, graphite and collapsed brick...

Well, I can confirm that the times my miners got black lung they survived at least until they got to the hospital. But again, that was from "bitominous coal dust" or something like that, which is a different block altogether. Were by any chance some of these poor sods member of the mason's guild? I heard that joining that guild provides resistance (maybe immunity?) to black lung, so if they were maybe you could rule it out.

I'm not sure how to check their details post-death, however, from memory they were both from the engineering guild... They were both from the starting seven.

So black lung can't be caused by lignite?

Yes. masons guild is the immune caste, they also get the mining bonus.

Black Lung is indeed caused by lignite and bituminous coal, specifically "lignite dust" and "bituminous coal dust", (The dust blocks never drop actual coal anyway, so it's no big loss.) if you can identify which tiles have dust in them and undesignate them ahead of time you shouldn't get any Black Lung Deaths.

Other than Black Lung; other mining hazards to watch out for are "weak warpstone" which makes dwarves vomit everywhere before getting tired and falling asleep, "unstable warpstone" which may kill even a Mason's Guilddwarf without medical care, and special spawning blocks that summon Balrogs or Shoggoths when dug out. (I've yet to encounter Shoggoths myself, but Balrogs are nasty, I once lost a few dozen orcs to them in less than 3 minutes.)

Hey, thanks LMeire, you cracked it.

I've just realised that I'd been mining Lignite dust - so black lung was probably the cause. Although I've got to say it was quite odd that my dwarves just drop so quickly, without warning, after mining it.

Thanks again everyone for the quick responses - much appreciated.

Black Lung's always been a quick death for me as well - they rarely seem to manage more than a dozen more blocks before they succumb.  Of course, I suppose maybe I should have tried sending them to the hospital, but I've always figured that if they're dead anyway they may as well make themselves useful...

Would dfhack "fastdwarf" command affect the time it takes?

As en expert on coal/warpstone kills (Becordobar lost >30 miners :D:D:D) I can confirm: 'You have struck xy dust' and 'Urist has been found dead' are usually triggered simultaneously :D

I can also confirm that this is a quick death.

Lost my only miner within the first season of the fortress. Kinda destroys the fun for me at the moment, because now I only have 6 dwarfs and it seems pointless to use another one for mining because he will just die like the other one :(

Would be great if this could be adjusted :)
