Let's Play X-COM Apocalypse: Send in the next wave!
« on: March 05, 2014, 09:35:42 pm »

It's that time again! Time for (yet another) X-COM Let's Play! This time, however we'll be stumbling through Apocalypse, the third game in the series.

Apocalypse takes place after the events of TFTD have rendered much of the Earth's surface uninhabitable. People now live either off-world or in Mega-Primus, the first Megapolis of its kind. Unfortunately, the MegaCity OnePrimus Senate neglected to finance the Judges, and as such have contracted security to Megapol, who are basically the city police, and X-COM, the local alien-hunters. As the game begins, surprise! Aliens have shown up again, and it is up to the decades-old organization to fight them off. This time, they're coming from another dimension and infiltrating various organizations critical to the city's survival. And this is where we come in. This will be on Superhuman, so don't expect your character to live long.

Speaking of that, character requests go as follows:

Name
Preferences for weapons
Personality/Bio

Unlike other X-COM games, we can't pick our base location, and have been assigned by the city here:

So. Who's ready for some alien hunting?

(Oh, and other opening game requests are welcome.)

Neat. Sure wish I'd played enough of this to know what I was doing!

Name: Coral
Preferences for weapons: Smoke grenades and the shocky-thing.
Personality/Bio: Cautious but greedy. Wants to live, but also wants to capture precious specimens.

Name: Ryan
Weapons: Autocannon (HE and IN ammo preferred) at the start, switching to a pair of the lesser alien weapons and alien explosives when possible. (Or just one, if you're playing turn based.)
Personality: Ryan is a loose cannon who just wants to cause explosions and burn stuff. He also loves speedy vehicles.

If possible, I want a normal human with low accuracy and high speed. I don't need accuracy. I have explosions.
I also want an autocannon armed hoverbike set to defensive (or whatever the third option was), named The Pillager, which Ryan remotely pilots.

Name: Tar
Preferences for weapons: Close-range stuff. Like, a Powersword even.
Personality/Bio: Tar formerly lived in an entirely backwater space station, but opportunity opened up on Mega-Primus and so the station boy moved to the Megapolis. Opportunity very promptly closed up and Tar was left jobless... yet with weapons training. There are places to go, are there not...?

Tar is entirely rough and abrasive in his personality; a combination of broken promises and crushed hope has left him bitter. Yet, he hopes to remain strong and maybe even someday provide an example to others.

((no not Tar as in Taricus))

Loved Apocalypse, it is the only X-Com I have finished multiple times.

Name: Genghis Kirk

Preferences for weapons: Auto-Cannon, normally fitted with In rounds, also carrying AP rounds, a couple of gas grenades and a medi-kit

Personality/Bio: Looking for a way to stay out of the local gangs, Genghis signed up as a security guard at a local hydroponics facility.  One night there was a lot of rucus and he investigated, finding some strange pulsating....living...things in the basement.  His supervisor made a panicked call to the authorities and a big red aircraft turned up and several troops disembarked, following him down to where the things were.  It gets a little crazy and uncertain at that point, weapons were firing, screams filled the passages in the underground storage areas, screams that were not.....human.  Genghis found himself invited to join X-Com, apparently he had shot something with his side-arm and the operatives were impressed enough to recommend him.  After a trivial amount of training, he has settled on his current role - Pest Exterminator.

Name: Adrock "Fumbles" Bluth
Preferences: Grenades and melee
Personality/bio: After a suprise visit from what was assumed to be a person in costume, Adrock, being a juggler in a traveling circus, managed to bean the alien with one of their balls they were juggling, especially when the visitor decided to start killing the audience. After it was confirmed they were not a person in costume, the instincts to kill it by using a chainsaw in the next act called upon the attention of a government agent on a day off. The fact that a civilian like this had the balls to do that, made them perfect for conscription into XCOM. Upon introduction, however, don't toss grenades at the new guy, he'll just juggle them to safety.

The tag "fumbles" came from how he got his job in the first place as a clown in the circus.

Name: Alberto Kigal.
Preferences for weapons: Muskets up! Affix bayonets! Chaaaaaarge!!
Personality/Bio: The heir to a wealthy trading company (specializing in chocolates) based in the Megapolis, Albert has never lived up to his unkind father's expectations, despite his best efforts in his chocolate-making and finance classes.
So much so, in fact, that his father has arranged for Albert to join X-Com as the new crisis begins, as a handy way of getting the dumb kid out of the way so that he can groom his younger, smarter daughter to take over the company instead.
Alberto, for his part, takes it as a great honour and a chance to some romantic adventures, battling aliens amidst a haze of gunsmoke, green blood and glory. Yeah, he is kind of a dumbass.

Name: EuchreJack (male), alternatively EuchreJane (female)
Preferences for Weapons: Pistol and Grenades
Personality/Bio: Suicidally curious, EuchreJack always want to know what's behind the next door.  Prefect scout, don't expect him to live long.

Rumors that I'm trying to achieve the "Most Times Killed" award for my avatars again in X-Com: Apoc...are probably true.

Looks like that's enough for an early-game squad. I'll put up an intel briefing on all the various organizations, and later today I'll get the first update up.

Name: Proto Man
Preferences for weapons: High power weapons of any kind, prefferably lasers.
Personality/Bio: An experimental robot built by Dr Light. He enlisted himself into XCOM when the aliens appeared despite his creator's wishes. He prefers to stay in cover and shoot enemies when given the chance, but he's flexible.

Name: Sally Samurai
Weapons: Sniper Rifle unless more advanced weapons are available, whatever else would be needed.
Bio: Sally wants to help, Sally wants to kill aliens, despite this and her name literally being Samurai she also would like to continue to live and not get too close to the enemy. She's not a coward, but she can't help people if she's dead.

I'd take that bet.  ;D

Although I note that your Kaos line in OpenXcom Superhuman is...similarly long on members and short on lifespan.  :P

Name: Boffinpickles Stuttersworth
Preferences for weapons: Something with a lot of explosions. An autocannon with HE rounds, preferably, though minilaunchers and heavy launchers also work.
Personality/Bio: Boffinpickles was once just another british scientist examining the effect of tea on the space/time continuum. Enlisted into XCOM when some aliens interrupted one of his experiments. He often "borrows" XCOM facilities to continue his experiments.
