Well, I would agree that fortifying the area around the gate has top priority. We don't need no doom coming to us - or making it easy on them.

I actually would suggest to lay back some 5 Engineers to construct an unmanned camera-drone. Just some throw-away thing, aimed at giving us a quick and dirty overview of the possible planetscape. Nothing more than a model aircraft with a camera and wireless connection to forward the material back home.

Else, I pretty much second Kevaks suggestion, especially about not doing any missions until we are "safe". As in "deathtrap" kind of safe. (Something the original series never utilized due to drama and cinematic intruder effects) Err.. yeah. So... wall-mounted flamethrowers, some very secure MG posts and some explosives hidden in the floor sounds about right. The magma-trap can wait for later~ :P

There is something wrong with your thinking dude, we have magma everywhere, we should use it.

Well, we should only use it after we know how to get rid of it, and how magma resistant our gate is.

If it's the same as in the show the magma ain't gonna scratch the gate.

Which series and which episode?  Besides, it not scratching the gate isn't going to mean anything if that magma is flowing through the shelter and killing everyone.

You said in the beginning post that there is magma in most of the shelters. Is there in ours?

The gates withstood damage superior to a volcano so I'm just guessing a volcano ain't gonna do all that much. It was shown that a nauqadah enhanced nuclear weapon couldn't damage a stargate nor could taking a direct hit from a meteor, but that will indeed be no comfort to the people burning to death while the gate laughs at them.

Season 4 episode chain reaction is the naquadah blast, I don't remember the episode for the meteor.

The ones with magma are the dead ones, which are all of them but this one.

The gates withstood damage superior to a volcano so I'm just guessing a volcano ain't gonna do all that much. It was shown that a naqueada enhanced nuclear weapon couldn't damage a stargate nor could taking a direct hit from a meteor, but that will indeed be no comfort to the people burning to death while the gate laughs at them.

Correction: they did eventually build a naquada enhanced nuclear bomb that could destroy a stargate, and the ones in Universe (which were some of the earliest versions) were destroyed by a simple plasma blast.  And don't forget that the Stargate hit by the meteor wound up having a strong layer of Naquada blocking the gate from allowing anything through on the other side, rendering it useless for the most part.  Also, the stargate on the original Tollan world was buried in magma, so while it might survive, it would take time to unmine, and the dialing device could be destroyed by that time.  The central array was smashed in "The Torment of Tantalus", so at very least the Gate would be rendered useless for quite some time.

I remember, that nuke was designed for that purpose and still failed the first time. It had to be positioned behind the gate so the energy would not be absorbed. Which for the purpose of my example makes no difference. A volcano does not produce that kind of energy and the heat of the blast that annihilated an entire planet failed to even disconnect a gate so a volcano could not destroy a gate.

True, but if the DHD is wrecked by the magma, then the Gate won't be usable for quite awhile, likely permanently if all the manufacturing materials are used up.

How many scientists are you going to put on each of the following: the staff-shaped weapons, the humanoid corpses, and the snake-like corpse?  Each is an individual topic, so you can't run them all at once.

I suggest 31 on the weapon 15 on each of the others. We need to know how our enemies weapons work.

I also suggest having 36 children trained by soldiers.

The more cautious thinking people of the shelter asked for the formerly dug out aspects of the living quarters that were being constructed in the area of the Gateway to be repurposed into a staging and defensive area to protect the rest of the facility against any hostile attackers.  While there were those that desired to immediately attempt dialing outwards, the majority thought the idea of a defensive area was good, if only to prevent what was perceived as a spot of hope from destroying them utterly.  Unfortunately, the proximity to the main living spaces and storage, and nearly all the rooms being taken due to crowding, four of the five rooms were turned into a command center, two barracks, with some minor, careful expansion to accommodate all the soldiers, with the weaponry begin held with the soldiers, due to the distance between the Gateroom and the armories, and a temporary storage for objects brought back through the Gateway.  The final room had the hallway to the Gateroom redirected through, the old being filled in with concrete and steel.  The entrance and exit into the room had steel blast doors added in.  In order to avoid contagion, a 24 hour wait time was instituted for travelers, with a window into the area with a lowerable blast gate in case of assault.  The walls and ceiling of the area outside of the gateroom proper gained plating cast in steel, with the floor having a covering of concrete.

Cameras are mounted in the Ruins now serving as a Gateroom that sent signal to various cameras in the command center.  Once set-up, the control device was moved to the gateroom.  A few of the scientists overseeing the process were curious if it still worked properly from there, or if it had to remain in place, so they attempted a dialing, but without using the 'point of origin' that was deciphered to be necessary for use as the final symbol.  When the Gateway was observed to work properly, and the symbols cleared when the red crystal on the center of the pedestal was pressed.

Thirty scientists are put on study of the assorted items discovered in the Ruins.  It has been determined that the six humanoid corpses are of a race similar to the Khünii species, to the surprise of the researching team.  The progress of the snake-like corpse is progressing, but with the mostly skeletonized corpse proving difficult to analyze, especially with the difficulty in finding similar beings on the planet.  The analyzation of the weapons is proving even more difficult, the technology far more advanced than any weapons technology currently available.  Preliminary trials do show that there is a required cooldown time of a second or two every three shots.

Since there is now a need for soldiers to be trained, the various militia forces within the shelter are assigned to teaching the children basic techniques.  Since all available soldiers that are not needed for advice on the construction of the outpost, the class size is one soldier teaching five children.

One of the air recyclers is taken offline for a short time to be cleaned, which is done successfully, but there is a fair amount of buildup in the other recyclers.
