You're still conscious, but someone else has taken control of all your motor functions.  You don't know who they are or what they want to do.
I agree with this.
As someone who actually has muscle spasms, I con confirm that losing control of movement is the most horrifying fucking thing you can ever face in your life. Even when it's not actively trying to harm you, it's unnaturally horrifying.

Five second bursts of hysterical laughter and shouting are among the only things that really actually scare me.

Making subtle changes to rooms or doing things that shouldn't be possible within the rules as the player understands them is pretty freaky too. One of the more surreal and somewhat freaky experiences I've ever had in a game was exploring a stronghold (in unmodded Minecraft. Not a horror game at all) where there were blocks missing, but with ladders and doors placed there anyway. Sections of the floor would disappear and reappear at random, and the whole game was running at ~4fps. If it had played a "Horrified Scream" sound effect, I would have echoed it.

Being assailed and devoured by a sandworm.

For the most part, I do a pretty good job of handling myself in unsettling situations. But I swear to the countless pantheons of vastly inferior gods, if I'm ever wandering through an expansive desert and take notice of a sudden, inexplicable rumbling emanating from deep beneath the earth, I'm going to lose my shit faster than a dung beetle in a dust storm.

... basically facehuggers, really. Worse if the first round only mostly kills you and there's a round n+1. S'got most of the standard stuff, really. Rape, loss of volition/control, grotesque amounts of pain, and, in the latter case, the promise of it continuing. Probably a little side bit where your experience is being used to inflict the same thing on others, as well.

E: Deep water's definitely up there, though. I'd personally rank loss of emotional capability as incredibly high up on the list, but that's something that you seem to have to actually live through to really comprehend. Great pain, emotional loss, loss of physical control, interaction with things like neurotoxins -- mental degeneration in general -- none of those have been or are as terrifying or painful as going back to being unable to feel.

Fuck water. If it's an amount larger than a bathtub, I shall be staying away thank you very much.

Waking up in the morning and being the only human (or animal, for that matter) left on Earth, everyone else vanished without a trace.
But... that would be awesome! For a while, anyway.
You could go around breaking things and riding shopping trolleys down large multi-lane roads! :D

I'm actually sort of more afraid of the idea of being stuck in open air. I used to have nightmares where gravity basically stopped working, and I found myself floating in a chaotic void unable to move anywhere.

I understand how water can be scary for people, but to me it's always had an element of freedom, I have six degrees of motion in the water, and can swim quite well. Not so much for falling or floating through the air.

Space stuff. Although not ordinary space stuff, spooky space stuff. Like ominous things that happen in space that shouldn't be happening, even finding relics on planets... Now that spooks me out, so much so that I love it.

Its... Hard to explain, I'm incredibly in love with all sorts of space related stuff, nothing puts me at ease more than looking at a stellar constellation... And nothing makes me more unease than looking into the gaping maw of a blackhole. Anything to do with unexplained alien stuff as well, like an ancient civilization or something like that. Space is a really cool place... But its also equally terrifying.

Mind reading and manipulation is what I find scariest. Just the thought that your thoughts aren't really your own.

Realizing that someone has messed with my memories, repeatedly, making me forget the realization every time. Bonus if something implicates me in activities that I would find immoral or disgusting.

Also, seeing the world around me change, slowly, becoming always darker - and being the only one that realizes that. Maybe at first things get moved when I turn around, up to returning home and not finding it - or finding it completely empty, my family disappeared without a trace.

Being in a room full of mirrors and you know there's something standing wherever you're not looking but you can't see it because when you move your eyes to look it moves just before, to a new place you aren't looking. You catch a glimpse of something and turn, nothing there. Then you blink and in the moment you blinked it appears before you, filling your view, and drags you into the mirror.

That and little things infesting under the skin, but you'll never die of it, just always feel them writhing and burrowing around.

Extended total sensory deprivation.  You feel nothing, you see nothing, you hear nothing, you know nothing.  Complete, total, and utter "nothing," forever.  The mind rapidly starts to break down without any external stimulation, leading to auditory and visual hallucination, anxiety or depression, the perception of false sensations, and a rapid breakdown in mental and physical capability.

To be honest, that and the puppet-master situation (combination of locked-in syndrome with something else taking over active control of those functions you lose) mentioned earlier in the thread are tied as the worst things I could see happening to me.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Something like this, but more that you lose the ability to speak/behave with discretion (rather than being possessed). So you're constantly doing/saying things you immediately regret (and that possibly shock you, as it gets worse), but can't pin it on being possessed by a demon or something (I think it makes it more scary if it's just you).
