Codes of Conduct
« on: March 04, 2014, 07:21:50 pm »

I came up with this interesting idea for DF. What if societies could develop codes of chivalry? For instance, in mideval europe, there was an unsaid rule amongst nobility that you should wait for your oponent to put his armor on before fighting him. It was considered dishonorable not to do so, even if doing so would give you a great advantage. For peasents, of course, this didn't matter.

The opposite of honor could become a code of conduct too. Maybe some human societies could become savage enough to gather trophies from people they kill. Maybe an elven society could be taken over vampires, which they worship as gods and occasionally give "sacrifices" (their children) to the nobles in order to make them happy.

Codes of behaviour would definately be interesting, particularly if you could influence them among your dwarves. As an example, it would bring a whole new dimension to the notion of having a religiously motivated starting scenario, if you can dictate or influence their lifestyle and behaviour from a moral direction as well as a purely practical one. Even if you couldn't though, more important and flavourful roles and behaviours for characters in the world to strive for - or against - would definately be a good thing.

Of course, all of this kind of requires personal morality to be a thing, which it won't be for quite a while.

I'm wondering if toady will ever add class systems to societies. Examples could be Feudal Europe, or feudal Japan. These class systems could change over time, sometimes because of religion and sometimes because of a change of rulership of an area.

Separate religious entities could form, and they could possibly become a big part in the politics of a civilization or group of civilizations. (think of the Catholic Church)

Fair enough. I was under the impression that more meaningful personal ethics (that conflict with the civ's) were still a ways off.

Send Ustuth Kibemuth to the elfs!

Let's this slacker starve!

A good Dwarf: hardworking and doesn't care about leisure time!
Let's clone him!

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/imgs/pers4.png

On the hand, he don't care about leisure time, and on the other hand, he's a ambitious dwarf with treacherous tendancies.
Tough call.

More seriously, this feature looks promising.

When the next version will be available? (Maybe Summer 2014)

I'd actually say summer 2014 is a fairly reasonable date.

Also, you missed the most important part of the second dwarf's info:

Quote
He drops any activity at the slightest hint of difficulty or even the suggestion of effort being required, and he is conflicted by this. He is absorbed in delusions of self-importance. He is ruled by irresistible cravings and urges.

Basically, he wants to be hard-working, but just isn't.

Then let him starve.
Slackers shouldn't be eaters.

Maybe sometimes a nationalist group could take over the government of a country. Think the Nazi party, or the Thalmor from elder scrolls.

The Thalmor aren't so much nationalist as super-elven, but that's neither here nor there.
