The ???st race is a kind of sponge. The larvae resemble seals, and live in large tightly knit communities. They are highly social, creative, and intelligent, with a highly developed culture of oral tradition and advance mathematics, however they lack manipulators and so have no tools. At some point around age 20-30, they are compelled to find a suitable spot ram their faces into the rocks and grow permanently attached - their friends will mourn after this moment as others do death. They'll be fed by their younger siblings and swell grotesquely to many times their former size as their bain gradually decomposes in a process similar to alzheimer's over several more decades. The adult forms can last for several hundred years.

The Qwogs are situationally cannibalistic: if one is seriously injured it is eaten by the others.

Qwogs have a distributed nervous system. They continue to "feel" and "think" at some level until completely destroyed. A Qwog that gets eaten can feel itself being digested.

The dusts,while giving those who walk within long lives, also give the afflicted a powerful sense of themselves and their own bodies, having them feel every aspect of themselves slowly wither away, both mental and physical, until they are left an emotionless and emancipated husk, having watched thier own minds crumble and fall, until the bodies finally give out.

The Nogi'a Suk'a cities are vast warrens designed to be defensible. They typically have one main residental cavern, and then dozens of of other small, specialized caverns. The greatest city, Woogu, has five chambers devoted to torture of captured enemies.

 Those who survive the torture are given control of a protectorate if they've fallen into insanity, so as to keep the population of the protectorate dependant on the Nogi'a Suk'a for aid. There are seven such Protectorates, known as the 'Impoverished and Malnourished Protectorates' or I.M.Ps.
