Roll to Be a <Skyrunner>
The world is a giant ocean. Most of the land surface is small islands spread across multiple archipelagos. Larger landmasses are few and far apart.
People have been mostly living isolated lives on floating cities close to the coasts: the land itself was mostly used for agriculture and the occasional villa of a seasick plutocrat. Long distance travel was rarely, if at all, attempted on account of the raging storms that occur every so often on the open sea.
This changed several years ago with the advent of the
skyships, large vessels that could both swim in water, and fly high up in the air where the weather is calmer. This has prompted an age of commerce, information exchange, and general growth.
With the sudden increase of population, people started moving to uncolonized territory: the sky itself. The largest
skyships eventually became veritable city states in their own right, thriving on commerce and craftsmanship. Presently, roughly half the world's population has been born off the ground.
The
skyships do have one one downside. They're slow. Really slow. A
skyship can fly as fast as an oxcart would move. Maybe a bit faster if it has a turbocharged engine and had minimal cargo on board.
This is where you come in. You are
<Skyrunner>s, people who soar the skies with their
skyboots, crossing leagues within a matter of hours. Couriers, messengers, explorers, speed demons, aerial aces.
Or at least that's what you'd say of yourselves if you had
skyrunning licenses. The good news is, you have already registered yourself into the
Skyrunning Guild, taken the month-long training course, and your test is right up ahead. But will you pass it?
(For the sake of narrative, probably)
What is your name?
How should I imagine you like?
Why do you want to be a <Skyrunner>?
What is your backstory that I'm probably never going to read?
I'm using a variant of the vanilla d6 rules. I call this particular flavour stracciatella.
Success is determined both by the roll of a d6 and by the circumstances. If you're doing something that's very easy/you're very good at/you're getting help with, a 3 would accomplish more than a 5 at an impossible task, for instance.
- You do so badly that you've possibly lost a rank in whatever skill you were using, if applicable.
- You did worse than you expected. High skill or positive circumstances might make you succeed, however.
- You didn't quite live up to your expectations.
- You did average, for your standards.
- You did comparatively well, and might have even improved at doing whatever you were doing. Doesn't guarantee a success, though.
- You did good. Perhaps too good.
Action Delay: If you miss an update, don't fret! You get to do two actions on the next round. This means a net loss of zero actions!
