Adventure Games: Please Help Recommend Some:
« on: March 03, 2014, 11:30:43 am »

Although I have never described myself as a hardcore gamer many other people would probably describe me as that. I own hundreds of games... Probably getting very close if not surpassing half a thousand at this point [I feel equal parts pride and shame]. Complex games like Dwarf Fortress don't bother me, in fact I love it when games challenge me to learn new systems. Up until recently I was in a gaming 'funk'. I felt like I'd played it all, my menu consisting of mostly strategy and grand-strategy titles, management or sandbox games [Minecraft and the like]. I like titles like these because I can keep coming back to them... But lately they just haven't been doing it for me.

I've never really explored adventure games outside of The Day of the Tentacle and the Monkey Island series due to their linearity and they never really caught my fancy [I felt that they were mostly aimed for younger gamers]. Through various bundles and deals I ended up with the following story/adventure games:

Gone Home
The Cat Lady
The Walking Dead Season 1
Long Live the Queen
To the Moon
Amnesia a Dark Descent
Amnesia a Machine for Pigs
The Void
The Chzo Mythos Series
Gemini Rue
Anna
Dear Esther
Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller Series

And wow... These games drew me right back in with their mature themes, dark and gritty atmospheres, horror/weird environments and emotional punches. Now that I'm finished them though I need something to fill the hole that they left behind! I'm looking for an adventure/story game with mystery, dark/mature themes, serious [non-comedy] subjects (horror and the supernatural are great) and preferably modern-ish. I have already tried Resonance but the graphics and story just switched me off.

Can anyone suggest to me a game that fits the bill? I am having some serious withdrawal symptoms already :(!

i forget what its called, but the creators of walking dead have another game of the same style set in a "gritty fairy tale" setting, if you can believe it

I believe it's called 'The Wolf Amongst Us' I'm waiting for all the episodes to be released first because the anticipation would kill me :P.

The Feeble Files does not fit the bill at all but it is a great adventure game but you should like British humour.

I Have No Mouth And Must Scream is pretty dark and definitely not for kids.

Countdown.  It's old and not all that good, though.

How about Clocktower from 1995?
Lucas art did a lot of adventure games back in the days if any of those would be interesting.
Then we have sanitarium and if you have a console you might look into the fatal frame/project zero series.
There was some game that was quite similar to amnesia bit was made a bit earlier, but I have forgotten the name.

I hear Kentucky Route Zero is really good, and of course Broken Sky just came out...

I was going to recommend Gemini Rue (since I found it to be a very interesting game which managed to merge the older and newer schools of adventure game design) but I see you've already played it. I believe the Blackwell series and The Shivah are developed by the same person/team and retain the same adult themes and gameplay design although I have yet to play them myself.

I also highly recommend a very strange game called Harvester, which while not a good game per say, should be experienced at least once - be it a playthrough or a Let's Play.

EDIT: if you really liked Dear Esther you could also try The Path and Gone Home.
You could try The Void as it's a surreal and unnerving adventure-ish game but it's gameplay mechanics are a bit hard to describe. It's basically part first person exploration, part resource management and part visual novel. A game where you "fight" enemies by painting symbols using your own life essence which also happens to bind the universe together. [reading failure]

I'll second Clock Tower: The First Fear, since you liked Amnesia, and Fatal Frame.
Corpse Party, possibly? I haven't played it myself.

And for the far left field, Snatcher, if you can handle the Kojima-ness and science fiction of it.

Quest for glory definitely.
The ENTIRE series. It's an Adventure/RPG game where you are an 'gasp' adventurer!
You can pick one of the 3 classes each solving the puzzles in their own way.

Not to mention you cna export heroes and their stats/some items from game to game.

It's just a great serioes everyone should try at least once... especially since QFG 1 and 2 both have remakes that make them more accesible to modern gamers (or you cna play the oldschool 8 bit ones where you have to type in commands!).

There was a horror adventure game I played a few years back called Scratches. I actually really liked it, mostly for the atmosphere.

Premise is you're playing as a writer who moved into a creepy old house for inspiration/seclusion and end up exploring the house and learning about the history of the house's previous occupants. Also, there's a strange scratching noise in the walls...

I played the original from 2006, but it looks like you can get the Director's cut version on Steam for $10, which I believe has updated graphics and slightly more content. Sounds worth a shot considering what you're looking for.

You could play Alan Wake, if you're the type that enjoys being disappointed.
FTL: Faster Than Light, while not an actual adventure game, has some similar components that you may enjoy.
The old Robin Hood game may intrigue you.
Under the Ocean, and Don't Starve are both survival-type games with some good adventure elements.
Also the Wizardry series may be interesting for you.

Although; FTL, Robin Hood, and Don't Starve wouldn't exactly be called "dark" or "gritty" (maybe Don't Starve would on the right settings.)

Also, the original Resident Evil game. Not the newer ones, the first one. It's amazing.
