Although I have never described myself as a hardcore gamer many other people would probably describe me as that. I own hundreds of games... Probably getting very close if not surpassing half a thousand at this point [I feel equal parts pride and shame]. Complex games like Dwarf Fortress don't bother me, in fact I love it when games challenge me to learn new systems. Up until recently I was in a gaming 'funk'. I felt like I'd played it all, my menu consisting of mostly strategy and grand-strategy titles, management or sandbox games [Minecraft and the like]. I like titles like these because I can keep coming back to them... But lately they just haven't been doing it for me.
I've never really explored adventure games outside of The Day of the Tentacle and the Monkey Island series due to their linearity and they never really caught my fancy [I felt that they were mostly aimed for younger gamers]. Through various bundles and deals I ended up with the following story/adventure games:
Gone Home
The Cat Lady
The Walking Dead Season 1
Long Live the Queen
To the Moon
Amnesia a Dark Descent
Amnesia a Machine for Pigs
The Void
The Chzo Mythos Series
Gemini Rue
Anna
Dear Esther
Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller Series
And wow... These games drew me right back in with their mature themes, dark and gritty atmospheres, horror/weird environments and emotional punches. Now that I'm finished them though I need something to fill the hole that they left behind! I'm looking for an adventure/story game with
mystery, dark/mature themes, serious [non-comedy] subjects (horror and the supernatural are great) and preferably modern-ish. I have already tried Resonance but the graphics and story just switched me off.
Can anyone suggest to me a game that fits the bill? I am having some serious withdrawal symptoms already
