Doesn't the cost of the claim increase depending on the area it covers?

Nontheless yeah it's pretty reasonable unless you're covering a huge area.

Yes but reasonable sized personal claim is still pretty cheap and you can load it up with a fair bit of gold.

Frankly, I wouldn't bother saving anything until you find a place to settle. And in general only pick stuff you know you'll use right away or in the near future, because everything is common enough to find when you really need it. Exception is silver stuff, ofc, ie those savage charms you're saving. Ditch the sled, it's slowing you down immensely and you want to move fast when exploring.

If you want to and you haven't used up your wilderness spawn you can spawn at my place, it's got decent terrain diversity, lime included. You can either join me or settle in the area and do your own thing, whichever you prefer. PM me for HS if you want to do this.

Already used the spawn.
But it's ok, another hour wandering and I found an area with pretty much everything in a couple minimaps radius. Lime, clay, stone, both forests and a lake with absolutely no sign of human life around.

Enjoying this thing so far, but I don't like the study system one bit. Today I logged in with 30k or so inspiration and pretty much used it all to get settling and the required proficiencies (prereq skills already unlocked yesterday). I'm aware of the stacking penalty, so I didn't study the same inspirational more than twice.
So basically now I can build my stake but can't do shit on it for a while.

I guess I'll go berry-picking.

Are you raising your humors? The more black bile you have, the faster you regenerate inspiration.

This game seems fairly interesting.

Yes, everything at 10 with blood lagging at 6.
Gonna do boiled toadstools and roasted nuts after I've raised blood to 10.
I'll also unlock literacy next.

Ow, you don't have literacy? No wonder you're hurting for inspiration.

So, could anyone give me a brief rundown of what precisely you do in the game?

Very general description, it's my second day playing this game.
It's similar to survival/building games like Wurm online or Haven&Hearth. Something in common with Unreal World, too.
You start with nothing, build basic tools, learn basic skills and gradually improve to more advanced stuff. At some point you decide to create your own place or join an existing settlement.
There's all the usual stuff: hunting, agriculture, gathering plants (main source of food at the beginning) and building various houses and structures.
You improve your character's stats with a pretty obscure system: humours. Basically different foods improve different stats, but you better look it up on the wiki.
You can't actually die of starvation, but you can't do shit if you don't eat enough.
And skills are improved via an equally obscure system, wich consists of studying items you find around, or craft yourself, to improve your proficiencies and unlock new skills.
The important part: apparently there is perma-death if you are killed by another player. But from what I understand the world is enormous, so if you walk far away from the main city, you are unlikely to get attacked.

Sorry about the double post, but I don't really like the atmosphere on the official forum.

A few questions:
- Slingshot. My shots go everywhere around the target but never hit it. How does it work?
- Fishing trap. Left one in deep water with all sort of shit inside (mix of plants, worms, wood choppings) for about 17 hours and found it empty. Is it normal or did someone take my fish?
- Skills. Gonna be a hermit for a while, until I decide if I like this game enough. Got pretty much all the basics and I think I'll take the various butchering skills. What's the most useful path for a lone player?
- EDIT: one more. Any way to tell if I already studied a specific inspirational in the current session? The tooltip always displays the same amount of inspiration points.

Ai Shizuka:

1. Sling shots travel in direction of your mouse pointer. In fact, it might be even they HIT where your mouse pointer is, but I'm not sure. If however you actually ARE using pointer to aim and still keep missing, then it's very much probably the case of camera position/depth perception. Dunno how to explain it properly, but basically when aiming you'll want your target to be directly above/bellow you and your mouse pointer directly on it - when shooting at things in horizontal line, I found it I also often missed my target because the game registered my mouse pointer as being placed beside, not on top of my target. Hope that explains it a bit.
2. Both assumptions are possible. Try moving the fishtrap to a different location, that's the best suggestion I can give you. Or you could just try again and see what happens. And try exploring your surroundings, if there's another lean-to nearby, the second option is quite possible.
3. Well, if you manage to get your own iron production going, you are pretty much good to go, imho. A lot of late-game items and also some inspirationals require iron.
4. Beats me, I asked myself the same question.  :-\

So yeah, I in fact still play Salem every second or so day. I do feel sad I kinda let our little town down, but I figured I'm not the best team player... I'm too much of a loner I guess.  :(
But anyways, quite some stuff happened in the meantime. DJ's post up above summed everything quite nicely, but let me just add Salem right now feels faster, with more stuff to forage, skills easier to get and consequently simply more stuff to do. Personally, I getting along quite nicely on my own piece of soon-to-be-double walled-off land, despite having the pleasure of being killed once. Character development feels less tasking now to the point I'm planning on making a scalper/raider alter somewhere in the future.
And not only this - Salem simply feels more alive. Teleport to Boston and there is bound to be at least SOME people walking around when in the past it was just a ghost town (at least in my timezone). Oh yes, I've seen it all - mansandwich at the statue, someone carrying around a freshly scalped, bunch of people being chased by crazed turkeys, spider in the middle of a town... And not to mention there are organized fighting tournaments. And the updates that just keep rolling. All in all, Salem right now just feels more, you know, alive.

Also this:

Let me direct your attention to the colors of the bars. What do we see there? Up right, we have blood. Color - red. Then on right is phlegm in blue. Bellow it, yellow bile. And on the right - you've guessed it, it's black bile.
What is so special about it? Well, 3 out of 4 colors now match the stat names they are representing. And why is THIS something to talk about? Well, because before the new guys took over, the colors went something like this - red, yellow, black, green. Stats were the same, btw. An illogical color composition that took more than a year and an entirely new team to actually get right. I mean, how hard would it be for the old management to just change the damn colors? ???
So yeah, I am greatly pleased with the direction Salem is going in currently.

TBH, once you can cut steaks, there's no pressing need to get further butchery skills as you'll be getting way more meat than you can eat. The high end one, Viscera and Bits, is really good but it'll take you ages to get there. Establishing your own metal production is probably the number one priority here. After that I'd focus on cooking skills, because having a wide variety of food helps gain humors faster.

Thanks for both replies.

Fish trap was probably a location issue. Didn't catch anything in a small lake but I also have a river very close to me. Got six fishes there in about 8 hours.
Still zero signs of human life, so it probably was just a shit location.

I'll try to play a bit more with the slingshot, but not going to bother too much. I can already aggro rabbits and crickets with stomp quite reliably.

Skills: ok. I'm getting the last couple skills to craft the first inspiration potion. Zero issues with money so far, so I can afford the bottles.
After that I'll get butchery and then the metal stuff.

Be advised that you'll need tons of money later on, as all sorts of top end stuff uses glass, so don't burn through it without a good reason (getting inspiration potions is a good reason if that's what's holding you back). Also, right now getting a town claim (which costs 2500 silver) is almost mandatory for security, but the word is that'll change in the PvP patch.

Me again. Going well so far. Found an iron node right inside my claim and I'm now getting mining. Got metallurgy before mining somehow  ::)

Another question: I can't find the soak values for buildings anywhere. How much phlegm do I need to destroy a pilgrim's hovel? I want to replace it with a farmer's house. Stats are 18/20/20/23 and I can't damage the hovel.
