First off! There's not a lot for a blacksmith to... actually do right now. Make nails mostly. Maybe a pot. If you're going for badass armor maker, you'll probably not be filling that role so much.

With that said, nothing directly detracts from anything else, and there are no proficiencies that boost blacksmithing (yet), so, go nuts!

Some new artifacts were released recently that hold life skill boosts, but I think it's only cooking/digging/wood chopping.

So basically yeah, you can play as loosely as you want through pretty much any stage of the game, the real specialization comes with artifacts, which are basically slottable things that provide various boosts, mostly damage and defense. I will say to work on mines and mountains now, though, because getting to the point where you can mine and smith takes quiiiite a bit of that. Rock Maracas, and generally any curiosity that has rocks in it will raise it to some degree.

I was checking the wiki a bit and as you said, not much for a smith to do right now, but I like the idea. If making nails is all what I'll be doing, well, so be it! :P

Thanks for the info, much appreciated!  :)

Don't let nails bring you down, by the way, people will need tons of nails, you could make a good bit of silver off it I'd be willing to bet! I think there's recently been an addition of copper and a copper pot to salem too, so copper pots are popular, for all the same reasons metal cauldrons were popular in HnH.

I have joined now and am slowly skilling up in the general vicinity of Seriyu.  Decided to focus on Frontier and Wilderness with the plan of improving my fishing chances.

Is (permanent) fireplace bugging out for anyone else too?

The game keeps yelling at me I have to be near fire to roast nuts, but fireplace still has fuel and I am supposedly close enough because I right click on it, move to it and then try to roast...but I can't. :\

Not my first time using fireplace so I know it should work...but then again, I had some other fireplace bugs today. Anyone else? Quick search on official forums returns nothing...

Adjust position and try again :D
Oh and it helps when opening the fireplace.

Are you sure you're right clicking the actual fire and not a pot above it?

Our little group is getting pretty well established. We got leather production going and a good stock of food and curios.

The only problem is we are dominated by grassland and I think we will need to make a move before we really settle down to establish a town.

There are some good areas nearby that I have my eye on, Imofexios started scoping them out last night, but I'd like to talk to everyone else before we move.

In other news I do have prospecting and a woo-woo wand and have found some iron deposits in our vicinity.

I would just like to say to fikes and Imo, that your town is not nearly close enough for me to walk to regularly and we'll have to do any trading or relations by boston. :P

While I'm here, anyone that's spawned near me, I left a pilgrim's purse in a crate near my stuff. Feel free to take it (and anything you need really). If you put something valuble in one of my crates, please tell me so I don't run off with / eat it, unless you don't mind me running off with / eating it.

I've figured out how to powerlevel and be able to actually gain skills properly with a throwaway character. I will be around DJ's area, Urist Olokdomill is the name. 8)

A question, if anyone knows, I notice I can grow wild plants in gardening pots (and have, to get some more useful garlic), and i notice I can plant things like devil's wort. Do I get multiple from a single planting, or is planting devils wort just a way to effect the quality of the plant/get side products?
