You got a hidden Necromancer somewhere on your map. They sneak around reanimating corpses until you catch or kill them. In the future, atomsmash as many corpses as possible (i.e. crush them with a drawbridge), and set up some cage traps. If you catch the necromancer you can put him to work raising corpses on demand for training purposes.

thanks but
some of the corpses became necromancers, too. Are necromancers who attack me from a kingdom, or are they independent and just stroll around? Can skeletons break doors?

Corpses should not become necromancers in general. Maybe they were necromancers when they were alive?

Necromancers are independent. In worldgen, they run away from their native civilizations to build towers where they take apprentices and write books. They can invade your fort if you embark close to a tower, I think within 16 world map tiles. They also send zombie sieges, which may or may not include necromancers.

Skeletons/zombies who could destroy buildings in life can do so in undeath, but most can't. Watch out for troll and FB skeletons.

You need to be 10 tiles or closer to the tower.  Necros claim to control a 21 x 21 tile square area, with the tower in the center tile.

Yeah the tower shows up on a screen you have to tab through a couple times to find.

It sounds like you got a necromancer "ambush" - just like with goblins, you can get an ambush or a siege. The siege will stop your game and give you an announcement, but the ambush is stealthed and will seek out corpses to res.

Have Fun!

It's possible you embarked near a necromancers camp, though not sure if they will also attack your fort if they only have a camp.

Also, if there are any towns or other civ sites that are under necromancer control, you will get zombie sieges that way. Not sure if necromancers will also come if its just a town rather than the tower that is in range.

Hehehe, I play on a world that has four necro towers on a pocket or small world.
At least 3 towers in range of everywhere.
Like A boss umbrella corp  8).

The tower is listed on the neighbors (nearby civs) screen.  That usually lists dwarves, elves, humans, and goblins, as well as their state towards the currently selected civ (on another tab on the embark screen).  I've seen mountainhomes, whatever it is goblin cities are called, (human) towns and towers.  Basically, any site that gets taken over by a necromancer counts as a tower for getting undead sieges.  Like goblins, they tend to send an ambush or two first, though sometimes they start with a full blown siege as their introduction to you.
