Had a one-skull caravan escort fairly early on (two skull missions had just started appearing with regularity) which resulted in three bandit ambushes (Poachers followed by Raiders then a bunch of Thugs) within a single afternoon, with a third-form ghoulie coming between the second and third waves. There was no recovery time between them - the caravan didn't get to move an inch.

A company that started with nine men saw themselves cut down to two by the time the last wave of bandits began to see casualties. Luckily my swordsman and crossbowman landed a couple kills in quick succession that saw the remaining five bandits rout.

One of my men, without a doubt wondering what was worth six of his brother's lives, discovered the shipment, which we were barely going to break even for the travel expenses alone, was of uncut gemstones. So we robbed the caravan and sold the gems ourselves, which gave us enough money to hire more men and, for the first time in my Battle Brothers career, recover from a series of defeats.

The company is now ten hardened men strong, and I am amazed I didn't need to restart.

Thats why you never do caravan quests. The difficulty is super misleading as you can get jumped by just any random mob that spawns, and this game can spawn some very out-of-depth mobs.

This is particularly true for early game caravan quests for long distances. They may seem tempting due to the high payout but half the time they path through greenskin territory and get mobbed.

So I tried going bandit and raiding caravans.  I was seriously disappointed by how little the caravans carry.  If you're lucky, you might find three trade items, which I guess sell alright.  I mean, sure the fights are pretty easy, but then the noble houses sent their troops against me, and those fights are brutal.

Overall, I think just doing missions is more profitable overall.

I think half the point of attacking caravans is specifically targeting the noble house supply caravans, as it is a relatively easy fight against nobles. This gives you a good opportunity to knife a bunch of footmen for their gear.

Yeah, I only take really short caravan escorts going to nearby towns. And even then I'll do something else if I can.

Although I rarely lose runs to caravan jobs. Getting lost items from tombs is probably my #1 run killer. Ancient dead are no joke, and the morale loss spiral if someone goes down against them just gets out of hand quickly early game. And yet, you can get such nice loot from them that I'm always tempted to fight even when I don't have to.

So many dead soldiers to them. So many.

Looks like we finally have a date for the new DLC. November 29th.

Really looking forward to everything in this update. Especially the reworked Flee button. That'll be really nice for doing tomb missions when you don't really want to fight the skeletons. Or for poking your nose into ruins/camps on the map and bugging out when you see what's in there.

You know you don't have to fight those Ancient dead, right?  You can just run away, and MISSION COMPLETE.  Unless you get the option to snag something else, don't do that unless you can win the fight.

Oh, I know. And I do when I'm being wise. It's just the temptation to fight them when it looks like a good map for it has bitten me many times in the past. You often get good loot from beating them (jewelry and gems and such), so when I'm tight financially it can be tempting.

I do that less often now if there are pikemen. I've learned that they are like brigand marksmen and will pretty much always roll <10 about every other roll, so having a strong defensive position is basically meaningless against them over a long fight.

I swear some of these units roll stupid low far, far more often than anyone else does.

Didn't know a DLC was coming.
That's pretty cool from Overhype, considering their previous stance about the game.
Also, 9.99$ is pretty cheap for a big DLC these days.

DLC is out today. Bought, but don't have time to play it for some time. Happy to hear first impressions!

Heard it runs well on Linux through Steams wine implementation. Will give it a shot if it's ever at 50% :P

Well, got to play a little bit last night. Didn't get terribly far into it, so I mostly just saw the normal early-game stuff we're used to. Did find some Unholds, though, which was neat. They do a great job of bashing you around and knocking people out of formation. Weren't terribly hard to kill, though.

Taxidermist is neat, though I didn't have enough stuff to actually make a whole lot. I do see the promise there, though. Paints look like they're priced about what I expect ~125 or so, which puts them solidly in the 'money to burn to look nice' camp.

I'll need to play more to experience more of the new content. The various quality of life stuff added in is all great, though.

So... I finally got the base game. It's entertaining enough so far.
I'm wondering if there's a mod to rebalance "attacks of opportunity" or whatever they're called in this game?

Not AFAIK. There isn't really much in the way of mods for this game, mostly just some cosmetic stuff.

There's perks that let you retreat or switch out characters. Shields also help.

Also, I hate fighting alps. They're the worst.

I, too, often suffer difficulty when fighting mountains.

Dog swarms are the way to go with dreamsnatchers.

Anyone know if the perk "reach advantage" works with pikes? They are two-handed, but I wonder if it only applies to greatswords and stuff.
