Well caravans are burning dumpster fires...

I take a caravan and halfway through the mission I see the biggest threat I've ever seen playing the game, 5 parties of orcs. Filled with wolf riders and warriors. The worst part was that after a battle the caravan just didn't move, waiting for the next group to reach us. They even got ambushes on us for some reason. It's like this was the most valuable thing on the map being guarded by two guards with knives who do nothing but stand there and die.

Must have been during a Greenskin crisis, a caravan through a crisis can get pretty fun. You can at least dump the caravan by hitting the x button on the contract if you run into a horde. He who fights and runs away lives to run away another day.

I've started to really like thrower/warbow hybrids for the backline, they can strip armour with thrown axes as well as snipe ranged units. I do keep one pure archer for sniping the necromancer though. Seems much better than the mass crossbows I tried in another campaign.

It is kinda funny how caravans are either or... Either they're easy money, or they're deathtraps.

Long time ago in an earlier version I was escorting a caravan when all of a sudden *BAM*, werewolf hunting pack. Largest I'd ever seen, and of course completely impossible to outrun.

For an early game party, things ended surprisingly well... We got some lucky rolls and managed to route them after only losing most of the caravan and a couple of our guys. We were battered, shaken, but alive... mostly.

And that's when the vampires showed up.

Trying the game some more now that it's finished.

Has anybody gotten two-handers to work?  I've put them on hills, given them the best armor I have, no matter what I do not having a shield in this game is just inviting death every turn he's within two hexes of an enemy.

Rotation helps, early level battle brothers with two handers are very prone to dying but if you can level them up they get pretty damn strong, so just wait until their melee skill is a bit stronger and then switch them from shields to two handers.

The one thing that I always thought theyd go deeper into what settlements.

I figured eventually you'd have control of making a settlement/village/castle, perhaps starting your own faction and building up locations.
Or at the very least, capturing these places and holding them for ransom from the factions.

Felt like they were going there and just didnt.

I've found 2h's are best off being kept behind the shield wall and baiting enemies into entering the 1-tile threat.
Then regardless of if they shield wall you can usually kill them before they have a chance to kill the 2h and go again.

There is no before they have a chance for me.  They die so fucking fast to anything that looks at them.

Maybe I'm just horrible at the game.  It feels like, especially against human enemies with shields, the game boils down to both teams lining up and rolling dice until one collapses, and fatigue values are so low even on high level characters that shield wall only works for a couple turns.

My full lineup has two archers and two crossbowmen, two guys with pikes/bills and the rest with shields. The key is concentrating on a couple of enemies at the time, plus taking as many out from afar as possible. I haven't used two-handers other than pikes and bills since, as you said, they take too much damage.

I haven't tried using that many archers, I've got two. W ell one now.  I gave my high initiative high dodge archer a two-hander to see how he'd do and he exploded the instant someone looked at him, same as always.  Probably gonna reload or even start a new game, I'm just spinning my wheels at this point.  Renown too high for my team, losing everything we gain as soon as we get it.

Do people generally think it's better to go for numbers first or power/  Should I be settling on seven or eight stronk dudes early or going for the full roster?  I feel like my fortunes starting to turn for the worse after I hit my 12-guy  milestone.

I'm currently testing a life hack of giving all my guys "nimble hands" (?) perk so that they could swiftly cycle through weapons during the fight. It proved to be super effective for archer for when they got into a tight spot but maybe I';; pull it off with frontliners too. Enemy charge? Ready spears. Shield wall? Switch to axes and swords.

Numbers first, i.e. the 12 cheapest homless hobos i can find, replace loses with good units. Good units get a Spear if there HP needs development.

keeping all of those in the pocket is going to tank your fatigue very quickly.

Having never played the game on harder than Normal... I can't really say.
But normally being behind my line and to the side is enough that people can't immediately get into b2b with them.

I wasn't aware pocketed items increase fatigue. How much?

Wasn't Bags & Belts changed so it eliminates pocketed items fatigue penalty like it used to? Look at the 1.1 patch notes.
(Without the perk you suffer 50% of the listed value)
