The wiki always helps.

Placing an impassable tile of the workshop over the magma will prevent dwarves from getting knocked in and prevent magma creatures from crawling out. Impassable tiles appear as a dark green color during initial placement

In a hole in the ground there lived a dwarf. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a dwarf fortress, and that means magma.
