It's possible it may just run high 80s normally and you never noticed... Maybe it's poorly designed, or you're blocking the fans when you use it, or something? You could try sitting the edges on something to lift it up so that the fans (if they're underneath because terrible design) and the bottom of it are in the air, etc.

Edit: Of course, you wouldn't think it would be able to run games at all if it was running high 80s normally...

Aw, sucks your overheating problems persist, and here I was just about to write how nice it is you've figured out what seems to be the problem. Well, at least it's nothing serious like hdd/gpu failure. And no, I'm not saying this sucks because giveaway is on hold, honest!

Hm... Okay, this is odd. Piriform's Speccy program reports a CPU temp of 90C+ consistently, but Speedfan reports it as a normal 30-40C.

The fan is running silently, the laptop is cool to the touch, I have the laptop specifically set to ensure airflow isn't blocked. I haven't gotten a single warning of any sort on if my laptop is overheating (I should get those right?)So I have no idea what's going on.

Did a quick search and there seem to be other people reporting Speccy might be giving strange results in some cases. Could be anything from it not getting along with mobo to (as someone suggested) it reading the temp of socket instead of core itself. I'd say trust Speedfan in this case.

Your BIOS (or UEFI, w/e) would normally power off your CPU if the temperature reached 90C - there might be a setting for it in the BIOS, but it would be turned on already when you got your computer and I can't think of a sensible reason to turn it off.

So it sounds like Speccy is lying to you for some reason - maybe there's something about your laptop that it's not properly understanding which is making it return an incorrect temperature.

You can definitely know it's wrong if it's only reporting 80+ or 90+ for the CPU, and other things are much cooler. If the CPU were that hot, everything else in your laptop would be super-hot as well.

Bah, one of those temperature monitors installed Search protect and something called "Orbiter", so now I have to run a virus scan. Apparently they're both "legitimate" programs and they seem to have disappeared upon uninstalling them, but I'm running Malware Bytes just to make sure.

It could be a case of thermal contact degradation. It's a simple fix, but the risk is pretty high if it doesn't go well.
But the part about other things being warm to the touch as well is also relevant, so this probably isn't the case.

Considering the close tolerances and cramped dimensions, that ball of lint could have been enough.

I would recommend checking your BIOS settings to ensure there are a few trigger temperatures set. Throttle down@80 and shut down@90 are good for desktops. Do some research to find what your laptop's typical running temp is.

P.S. told y'all it was a heat issue. :P

Eek.

I went "Oh, I hope there's no malware in this" when I installed Speccy, but it doesn't appear to have installed anything here. (I had SpeedFan installed already, since I use it from time to time)
Just out of curiousity, did you install anything else (or did the installer for Speccy contain optional malware, and I just don't remember seeing it or unchecking it during the install?)?

I believe it was CoreTemp (Which also showed normal 30-40C degrees). I didn't even see any option about it.

In any case, it seems that temperature isn't the issue, so we'll keep going. I've also got a surprise today, 4 days of work in a row instead of my usual days off. Joy.
