Problem with Amazon is that it would require her to enter financial information on a public computer, which she doesn't want to do. So I guess she's stuck with brick-and-mortar stores unless she has a friend who can help out. (assuming she hasn't eaten them all)

Well that sucks about the wireless adapter. How old is the computer?

Quick edit: and I am IN for the humble indie bundle 12 for $10.00.

I believe Blaze said the issue wouldn't be fixed until Wednesday. And the Humble Bundle only lasts for three more days. If you do the math, the humble bundle will cease to exist by the time the winner of this round is decided.

I don't think the budget is quite big enough for that.

Depending on the card it uses, and Blaze's skill with a screwdriver, it could be plenty.
If it's entirely a matter of taking it to a shop though, yea, the labor cost would probably double the cost, and put it too high.

Now this is odd.

So it turns out the issue is caused when I play Touhou Hisoutensoku with voice mod and AI manager. It somehow makes my wifi adapter go wonky and freezes the computer mid-game. This never happened before and doesn't happen when my wifi adapter is out of commission so it must be a new windows/driver update causing it (I'm guessing it's Winblows 8 because now there's a whole bunch of background programs running that weren't there before). I'm not sure whether it's the game, voice mod, or AI manager causing it, or whether it's some combination of the three.

It turns out that if I leave my computer off for awhile and then turn it on, the adapter starts working again. After the second freeze, the wifi booted, but then failed soon after so it might be out of commission for good; or I didn't leave it off long enough. I'll leave it off for an hour and check on it.

What kind of computer is it? Shouldn't matter how long you leave the computer off for.

Unless the adapter is overheating or something, anyway.

Please note that I'm not suggesting that an overheating adapter is the problem, I'm just pointing out that leaving the computer off for a while would allow it to cool down.

Do you think you could try reseating the card?
Could be a troublesome socket connection.

Alternatively, have you noticed a change in how hot the laptop gets?

I assume you've manually looked to see if there's a recent driver available at your manufacturer's site?

In either case, you can try looking at your Chipset, WiFi, and Networking device pages in the Device Manager and seeing if one of them did indeed get updated near when the problem started.

Okay, so everything seems fine so far. We'll tentatively keep going.

Cicero: Space Rangers
Sirus: Super Time Force Ultra
i2amroy: Agarest Zero
NullForceOmega: Magicite
IronyOwl: Xenonauts
Sinistar: Legions of Ashworld
Shadowlord: The Last Federation
choppy: Humble Indie Bundle 12

I'll leave it on for another day to see what votes roll in.

This laptop is not even 1 year old yet, and I keep it on one of those support thingies with built in fan. Hisoutensoku doesn't cause the fan to start roaring so I doubt heat is the problem.

As a sidenote, it turns out that the wifi adapter does have an update available, I don't know if it fixes the issues with the game/mods but I'll test that later.

Edit: For what it's worth, the issue seems to be with the game itself, not anything else. Specifically, it locks up on a certain weather change. Went into practice mode and cycled through all the weather patterns while the adapter was offline and nothing happened; Played a couple games with mods on with no issues.

The only thing left to try is to reinstall the game's executable via updates available on the game's site, and if it still freezes after that I'll have to give up on the game altogether (or disable the adapter through the device manager when I want to play it).

Depending on the make and model of computer, you should either have a keyboard shortcut or physical button to disable your wireless.
