Looks like I did something again.

My AMD card was locking up the whole computer repeatedly. And it kept failing to update. So I ran the AMD cleanup utility and removed all the AMD drivers.

So I'm down to my basic display; which honestly isn't that different really. Hopefully the AMD auto detect will fix everything once it's finished downloading.

238MB in 238 minutes  :'(

So in case something breaks. You'll know.

Well okay, the update seemed to have reduced the problem a bit, but it still hangs the computer periodically.

I just ran Windows update again, and now Windows Module Installer Worker is using 100% of my disk.

I'm afraid I'll have to put this on hold for a bit. At least until WMIW finishes whatever it's doing.

Well, I ran a checkdisk, and it froze at 30%.

After 3 hours there, I forced a shutdown. It now boots to a black screen.

Obviously, this means I can't continue until I buy a new computer.

Is that how normal people* deal with these things? Or is it a laptop and you can't exactly test and replace stuff? Well, you should still be able to replace the hard drive if that's the problem, I would assume. Of course, if you've had nothing but problems with that computer anyways, you probably want to replace it regardless...

* People who aren't used to looking at event viewer and SMART diagnostics and fiddling with control panels and putting linux on USB sticks JUST IN CASE?

Sure, if that's what she meant.

Since Blaze wasn't specific as to when it went blank, I was assuming it went through the BIOS check and then went blank instead of booting windows properly, since damage to the filesystem seemed like a more probable result of "I turned it off while chkdsk was running because it was frozen at 30%" than the motherboard deciding to commit seppuku (or the other things).  :P

Ahhhh, Windows. I remember and love all the Windows problems I have had over the years. I now am never without an alternate boot method.

I would suggest trying to boot using a Linux Live-CD, or even Super-Grub, but there's the small problem of even setting these things up when there's no computer to set them up with.
