I'm indifferent to the elves.  I like some of the things they can bring me (I nearly always base my cloth industry on rope reeds, so if I can't find them by gathering, I look forward to the knife-ears' arrival), but I don't like them being picky about trading, nor that they can't haul much weight with them when they go.  They can be amusing to kill for sport, but I don't typically go out of my way to do it, there's little point.  I think they'd be a lot more interesting with the diplomats back in, but I don't do much modding.

Uh huh. When you accidentally select a crate to trade, anger the trader and then a few seasons later, elves start showing up with an attitude.

I'm indifferent-to-friendly towards the elves. I've never seen them in their anti-dwarf heyday, so to me they're just picky buyers. And they willingly come to my fort expecting nothing but a bit of trade, are unarmed and their civ doesn't even react to caravans disappearing, so i find killing them unsporting to say the least. On the other hand, i won't put much effort into keeping them alive when they manage to attract a goblin ambush. Last time they accidentally ran into my minecart grinder, i was torn between embarrassment and annoyance - embarrassment because this was clearly an inappropriate way to greet well-meaning guests, and annoyance because my dwarfs had to spend extra time filing away their crummy wares i never wanted to acquire.

PS - i find the humans much worse trade partners - all the clothes they bring are unusable, and if you trade them too much junk, they take so long to pack up that they're in danger of colliding with the dwarven caravan, resulting in a broken wagon and massive trading messes. I've taken to blocking the wagon path when awaiting the humans in one fort. Makes it necessary to buy some heavy crap so they can take everything i want to get rid of, but it's not like i'm missing out on useful items.

A lot of the time elves turn up during a siege and get murdered. Then I nick their lovely loot :)

Ah, elves. If I trade with them, some wood inevitably sneaks in and they leave. If I kill them all their useless crap takes months to haul around, and the militia will always find a way to use their wooden weapons at the worst moment possible. Incinerating with magma really is the best way to deal with them.

I dont like elves in fantasy in general, largely because they are so close to humans they seem redundant. The same thing applies to dwarves for me as well.

But in the context of DF, they get bonus points for the tamed animals they sell and so are tolerated for their utility.

I like trading with them. They bring such nice animals. This can be bad though, because I end up with 200 Wild Hogs or some such animal that have to be collected for caging for the sake of my fps.

Here's a good tip with trading the elves without problems, at least until prepared meals aren't so terribly valuable. Search for 'Prepared Food Pot' in the bring items to depot menu. Everything shown will be extremely valuable, and Pots can't be made from wood.

I was trying to maximize created and exported wealth last game prior to activating invaders as I used a low population cap and needed the dorf children to have time to mature.

Recently a dragon burned the forest and this bastards blame me.
In the current version, trees don't burn. :P (Yeah, I'm late to this.)

Annnndddddd I don't really care about the elves much. I find it somewhat amusing to capture their princesses and druids and whatnot if they're attacking me and cage them in wooden cages. It just feels... well, amusing, like I said.

I'm also working on a story that originally aimed to portray an elf DF-players could come to like... so keep that in mind.

Ever read about plans for some of the earlier Elder Scrolls games (Morrowind, IIRC)? Michael Kirkbride was under the opinion that elves and beast races shouldn't be playable at all due to how different they are from humans, but since they insisted, they came up with some ideas for how the difference could be represented in-game. For example: all humans would appear zombified to Altmer because they're all just that ugly. Argonians would have a completely different UI that would change entirely whenever you would lick a hist. Things like that.

Not to mention the Dwemer (underground brilliant anti-theist elves) being what they are...

I have never liked Elves in anything. They have always seemed way to "perfect". Superb grace, calm, immortal, skilled at magic, archery, and swordsmanship, rich, organized, blah, blah, blah. Can't stand it.

This assumes that all elves are Tolkien.

I actually have a friend who swears blind that the Dwemer are not elves because they're dwarves. It kind of made sense when he explained it (he'd probably been practicing :P) but looking back it makes no sense at all.

I always said, "Screw the canon, they're dwarves" when I came across them.

I'm not a fan of the whole 'in tune with nature and protect in viciously' kind of elves and the aloof and greatly magically powerful kind are fairly hit and miss with me.

I like my elves to be far disconnected from humans and not well known about so that there's all the rumours of them being great protectors of nature or amazing wizards but the truth being that they're either quite close to humans in reality, or they're savage cannibalistic tribespeople who use horrific dark magic.
